Here are some pictures of my first damascus bowie...

I first posted this over on the "Gallery" forum but I think perhaps here's where folks that make their own knives seem to show up the most so I'm reposting the pictures here, hope no one minds.
I forget that people want to know all the particulars...(someone asked over on the gallery forum)
The guard is made of iron from a wagon wheel tyre; acid etched then heat blued in a kiln at about 475 degrees. The hafting is mammoth ivory, the escutcheon is sterling silver (easy to work difficult shapes) and the pins are nickle. The blade is a five bar composite made up from L6 and 01 folded 180 folds and measures 9 X 1 3/4 X 5/32 inches. I had a few problems with this billet; particularly back twords the part I had welded to a piece of rebar for a handle: their is a small cold shut in the tang and one (you can see it in the picture) at the heel of the blade on one side as I got my billet a little sideways in forgeing it out.
Bruce, if you see this entry, I've a question; on a bowie of this size, how much time is devoted in just produceing the finished folded stock before you begin to shape the blade? I have found so far (I made my second damascus blade a few days ago) that I'm 3 hours just makeing up the steel I'm to use and nearly all of that time is waiting for things to re-heat enough to weld again, how long does it take you with all you experience?
compliments & regards,
mitch
