This is my first sole authorship damascus after rough grinding (no H/T). Blade: 8" (1080 & 15N20) 320 layers.

Sorry for the poor picture quality but that's the best my camera can do.

That's a real thrill, Gary!!
Thanks for showing us that.
You can only make that first one once and it looks like this was a complete success.

Looking good Gary, I remember my making my first of course I could not sell it because it was my first so I gave my dad my first knife made from my first damascus. Hope you will keep your first in the family ;). Now the problem I have every billet I make I get that first billet feeling and have to rush and etch to see what I got, kind of like open Christmas presents :D. Man I hope I never get tired of making it.

Thanks for sharing your first with us.

That looks great! I love making damascus. My first billet was a mess. I think I only managed to get one blade out of it that didn't have any bad welds. The rest were all relegated into the "Box of Shame":) I've played with it quite a bit since then, though, and finally got that under control. Now I'm hooked! I find myself having the same issue as Mike with each new billet I make, just cant wait to etch it a bit to see how it turned out. That's half of the fun! I can't wait to see how the knife turns out, you're designs are always exciting.

Thanks for the kind words. Still have a lot to learn about making damascus but that's the fun of it. Right? :):) I am pleased just to get a billet on my first try that had no bad welds. Have to say that the press from Uncle Al made it much easier. I'm not sure if it is the correct thing to do, but I have the forge adjusted to 2300 degrees which seems to make it easier as well.
