I have a recently aquired love for traditional knives and would like enter into the world of slipjoints.
What would be a relatively inexpensive first slippie?
So far im looking at these:
Case peanut and pen in with yeller delrin and cv
Case peanut and slimline trapper in red bone and cv
Buck companion, both the delrin handled and the dymondwood handled version
Buck canoe and deuce

I know its a fairly long list, but i want my first experience with a slipjoint to be a good one :)

Which would you pick? or any other suggestions?
Also im from Australia so that may limit me in some ways (such as online stores)

Get on the bay and find an Amerian made Schrade 8OT Old Timer. One of the best knives ever.

Tom,that's the exact one im leaning towards.I really dig the rich red bone. What about the CV vs stainless dilemma,is either one better than the other?

I would say a Case Sodbuster with CV steel. You might end up buying more slippies but you will always keep that one1

That is an age old argument :). I have had great luck with both. With Case I like their CV. Takes a finer edge to me. It will discolor and can rust. If you want it to stay shiny that is an issue for some.

I would be happy with either though. If you do like CV you may want to look at the Chestnut Bone Peanut too. I feel the color mellows a little better.

They are all nice. If I had to choose it would be the Red Bone Case Peanut in CV.

Given the choices, that's the one I would have made.

When I had to make my choice, I picked up a Case Sodbuster, Yellow Delrin, CV blade. But you didn't ask what I did :D

Well it's just my feeling, but I'd deffinatly go with the yella peanut and pen CV. There's a special look to well patined blades and yellow scales.

Then you need a yella soddie.

Then you need a yella...

:D

Now what "I" would do is go ahead and get the CV bladed knife for a start and THEN get the Buck Dymondwood for a stainless version test subject. But that is just me.....

300Bucks

If i had to pick one with a CV blade,it would either be the yeller handle pen knife which i can get for $45 (Australian prices here)or the red bone peanut which is $55.

however,I can get a Dymondwood Buck Companion for $25.If i had my own way, i'd try and get the Case pen knife AND the Buck Companion.

300Bucks,which CV case would you choose?

My granddad carried a yellow case pen knife, I have it, but the Case shield is missing.

I am partial to yellow scales no matter the maker......300Bucks

Ps Stag is right up there with yellow, but then there is good jigged bone,,,,,start with yellow....to heck with it.

I'm also looking at a Case Peanut CV in chestnut bone now.

At the moment i'm deciding between:
Also i'll mention the price i can get them for (Australian dollars btw)

Case Pen knife CV yellow handle $45

Case Peanut CV red bone handle $55

Case Peanut CV chestnut bone handle $55

Buck Companion SS charcoal dymondwood handle $25

I dont want to spend too much as this will be my first slippie and i wanna get a feel for them before i jump straight in.

If cost is a factor then the Buck is the best bang for the buck going. No pun intended. Nice stainless, easy to sharpen etc. I carry a 301 or 303 all time lately. They don't have all the charm, to me, as a carbon slipjoint but are a fantastic knife in their own right. I would recommend one without hesitation.

Not cost really so much as value. Is the Case CV worth the little extra money?

It's a personal preference. But, yes, it is worth it. Case's CV blades take an excellent edge. Like has been said above, you do have to give it some extra care. I keep an oily rag at my desk. And, at the end of the day I'll clean my knife and wiper her down with the oily rag so she don't rust.

The CV steel takes on a nice patina, and adds character to a knife. I started my collection with stainless Case trappers. I bought one 3254 in CV and now that's the only kind of steel I want in my Case knives. I now have a couple of Case's in CV, and plan to buy more.

Knives are such personal tools that it's hard to recommend colors or styles. I love their Amber bone, Chestnut bone and their Red bone. The pocket worn series is nice too. But there are not many pocket worn in CV.

Good luck on your choice, and enjoy your new found addiction.:D
