Hey guys, had a quick question that I wanted to get some opinions on....

I've got a friend who recently asked me about which knife he should get. He's looking for something that can be used for general tasks as well as personal protection. It must be a folder, and he is looking for something under $100 if at all possible. I also don't see him getting another knife right away, so something that would last a good while would be nice. That opens up so many options that I would like to see if there are any that I may be forgetting. Since he's not a big knife guy, a general blade shape would be better than say a tanto point or something like that.

One of the first that came to my mind was Spyderco. I have the Endura SS model, and really like it. It's easy to maintain, works flawlessly, and I think it would do really well in a SHTF situation if need be. Another one I was thinking about, and I know many people aren't a fan of the company, is the Cold Steel Voyager. I've used one for quite some time, and really like the blade shape, size, and handle. Plus the low riding clip keeps it under the radar. I know that 5.11 makes some good Tarani designed blades, but I'm not familiar with prices and reliability.

I would like to see him raise his budget a little, so I could include some of the other manufacturers that I like (Benchmade for example), but for his first knife I don't think it's gonna happen. Thanks in advance! :D

Just bought an SOG Aegis online for the same reasons. Little cheaper budget though. Based on the Spyderco Klan's luv and multiple purchases....your recommendation is prob spot on. Looked real hard at the Endura's. Will likely add one to my collection as I....actually BUILD my er ehmmmm...collection. ;)

Right now I have a Gerber, a few Frosts and a premium Buckmaster fixed blade. (carried the Buck and Gerber when I was in the army). Decided to start my collection point with a few SOG's and then move on to either Spyderco's or Kershaws......maybe Benchmades.

Good luck, let us know how it goes.

Does he have a length restriction on blades where he lives?

Spy Delica/Endura
BM Grip/mini Grip

Spyderco Tenacious is hard to beat at $35. G-10 handles, fully skeletonized liners, phosphor bronze washers, 4 way adjustable clip, ect.

I think HOW he wants to carry, is an important question. I'd suggest anything that rides super low, so he can get used to carrying without thinking about people seeing him with a knife. Once he's fine with that it'll be an easy step upto a 10" bowie

Save Money and go with an "ONTARIO RAT 1." It has an AUS8 blade, metal liners, goood liner lock, and a good pocket clip that can be adjusted to any carry style including left handers. I have beaten on mine and it still locks up 100%.

It will only cost your friend 25 to 35 bucks online, so he can still afford some other knives after.

Here is a video that reviews the Ontario RAT 1 if you are interested: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YfTiuenwSjw&feature=channel_page

Thanks to all for the suggestions! I had totally forgotten about the RAT1, so good looking out on that one. I'm at his house now, waiting for him to get home, so I'll let yall know what he chooses.
