First Emerson Arrived Today

So I had been interested in Emersons for a while now, looking mostly at the Combat Karambit and CQC-7. I decided that I was going to buy a karambit to add something unique to my knife collection, I looked around and besides a custom Emersons was the only company I was interested in. I thought it would also be a good chance to see why they were so highly spoken of. The only thing that turned me off was the price. Given the recent decline of the Canadian Dollar, I couldn't get a Combat Karambit for less that $330 CAD. So when one of my favorite online dealers had it on sale for $250 CAD (~$190USD) I jumped on it.

It arrived today, and after handling and examining it I am quite pleased with my purchase. The G-10 in some places is not perfectly flush with the Ti, but it doesn't bother me. The centering, blade grind, out of box sharpness, and lock-up are all near perfect however. The action is a bit gritty, but I have read that there is a break in period with Emersons.

I do have one question for Emerson owners however. When it arrived I attempted to disassemble the knife to help with the grittyness. I got as far as getting the G-10 on the none locking side off, however it seemed as though the female part of the pivot as well as the stop pin were press fitted (like a rivet) into the Ti making it impossible to disassemble. Is this normal? Or do I just need to give it a little force to get the scale off?

It is a 2013 Combat Karambit, not the bullnose variation.

They are just a snug interference fit. They should come out with only moderate pressure.

Welcome to the club! I don't have a karambit(yet) but I have several other emersons and the stop pin should fall out as well as the female part of the pivot. The grittiness actually helps the knife break in faster.

Also, where's the pics???

I'm jealous your first is a karambit. I've got a a roadhouse in my pocket but still eyeing karambits regularly.
Im sure when I have the extra scratch I'll jump. :D

One thing I really like is the satin finish Emerson does. It is very much like the finish Microtech does. Gorgeous.

I've owned the same karambit for years. It's a jewel. You will find it gets better and better with time insofar as break in and 'feel' is concerned.

I'm not one to take an Emerson apart when I get it,--tweak it, yes; diassembly, no--that's impatience :). I let them break in naturally. Hopefully the disassembly you attempted won't change anything. Let it break in over a month or two and you'll find you like it even more. The 'gritiness' you feel is pretty much normal for a new Emerson...think nothing of it. Emersons want to be USED. Just use it and be patient with a break in period. When new, Emersons EVOLVE over a little time. I never lube an Emerson either.

One tip---I keep mine sharp via strop. I use an old belt (rough side) and sort of curve the leather to better match the edge. I strop mine with the belt over the side of my kneecap to curve the leather properly, pulling the BELT along the edge with the karambit remaining stationary while applying proper pressure. Sounds crazy and takes practice but it's the best way I've found to maintain its edge. I usually do it casually while watching TeeVee or something. I'm not about to try a stone on that curved edge. It will rod-sharpen very easily too with ceramic or diamond if you ever let the edge dull beyond the ability of a quick strop up to bring it back.

Congrats. Great choice.
