So I just purchased my first Emerson. It's a 2012 CQC-8 black coated. It's very newish, never used and not broken in. Lock up is around 30% and the ball detent and or the pivot are pretty gritty. As far as the break in goes I've heard everything from full disassembly to running it under hot water and lubing. I know there's tons of threads on this but I don't know which route to go. I'd really hate to take a new knife apart, but I will if I have to. Any thoughts?

Run it through soapy water and dry thoroughly. Then add small amounts of lube to to the pivot and any other moving parts.
You may have some grit around the insides and pivot, and rough machining around the edges but after a few weeks of breaking in it will be very smooth and is easy to clean out when full of debris/crap.

I loosen the pivot until the blade is very loose and then generously lube it up, then tighten it. Then I just open and close the blade until it feels good

Use it for a couple of weeks, it should break in nicely and be noticeably smoother.

Well I've loosened the pivot slightly and have been playing with it for awhile and it already seems to be smoothing out. I've waved it a few times. Man it's crazy . I'm gonna chew up all my pants haha.

How do you guys feel about pencil lead on the tang to improve lock smoothness and break in?

Well I wrapped my hand in leather and put an ass load of pressure on the blade and the lock hasn't failed. Once this thing breaks in its all gravy.

Congrats on your trusty new friend. The process you are going through will help cement a bond between you two.

I like to take my Emersons apart after a bit of use to give it a good flushing. Not necessary but it's easy and fun. Just don't lose anything.
As for lubing it, you can but again its not necessary. The nylatron washers are self lubricating, adding more can attract lint and debris faster.

Some people prefer it. For me, Sharpie or a permanent marker works much better.

And yes, your pockets can/will get shredded.

This. ^
But they break in nicely all by themselves.

This is my experience too... Just use it, sharpen it, clean it a bit, a drop of oil in the pivot-maybe- ...and that's it. Regular use is the best break-in process, so I found. Congrats on a great knife!

Thanx for all the help guys. I've been carrying a Spyderco Military for the past year. I love the Spyderco, but this Emerson just screams to be used and abused without hesitation.

Remember the Ruffles Potatoes Chip commercial, about not being able to eat just one? What is your next Emerson going to be? LOL
