Hello, I was looking for some advice on my first ESEE knife. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm looking at getting an Izula, mostly to test out the concept of a neck knife (I've never had a really compact fixed blade like this, or worn a knife as a neck knife, so I'm interested in trying out the idea), and I've heard it's hard to beat the Izula when it comes to production neck knives. The price is quite reasonable, too. The thing is, I've never owned an ESEE/Rat cutlery knife, or a neck knife of any kind before, so I don't really know what I'm getting into...

I plan to try carrying this knife around my neck, or maybe in the pocket, so I'm worried about it being too bulky with the scales and sundries attached. It will be used mostly as a work knife, in the kitchen, and for general EDC stuff.

I was wondering, though, whether it was worth the extra cost, in your opinion, to get the optional micarta scales/"kit" to go with it. For that matter, is it worth the extra cost to get the Izula II? Any opinions or comments would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

(PS: I've seen pictures of Orange Izulas...are these still available, or have they sold out?)

If you're worried about the knife being "too bulky" in the pocket with scales attached (get em, you won't be disappointed), then the pants you're wearing are too tight(put the "sundries" someplace else if you want to pocket it).

I'd say drop the 'scales' idea if you're generally gonna neck carry.. and if you've never necked carried it may not be for you... I like it, others don't..

If you're the later then you can always pocket/hip carry at this point if you like that then scales are also preference...

I'd stay with the standard version...

ETA: seeing how you're an old school member, send me your address and you can try one of mine out for a while see if you like it....

Great knife made by great people. Its not too bulky, but unless you are looking to get into a neck knife survival situation, the kit is excess. My daughters came with a kit, and its perfect for what I wanted her to have. She loves all the stuff and is excited about learning how to use all of it.

Perfect for the front, back or even 5th pocket carry. I wear an ESKabar IWB at 3 o'clock, and you will never know the Izula is there, unless you need it.

Whiskey tango foxtrot, something's happened to moose.

What? It is, I have 2 of them. I just don't use them. They're just for lookin' at. Even my daughter has one. Izula, the knife of choice for little girls.:D

feeww, for a second there I was worried about you. :D I gave my sister and izula and she likes it, so I can't argue.

Could you expand on this? I have an EsKabar.....arrived two days ago.

What does IWB mean? How exactly do you rig it up to wear? I have plenty of paracord and can rig up something to hang it from or are you referring to a device that allows you to hang it on your chest in a 3 o'clock position?

Wow that was QUICK,

What? not dipped in chocolate too?:)

Naw, the only thing I like dipped in chocolate is peanut butter. Well, peanut butter and my wife.;)

Moose makes everything interesting.

If I were going to be using it as a neck knife fairly often, I'd go with the original Izula with a paracord handle.

This thread definitely took an interesting turn!

Haha, it certainly did...

Thanks for all the replies, and thanks TheLastDaze for the very generous offer. I really appreciate the help from everyone!

I'm going to stick with the standard Izula. I might order the little boot/belt clip or scales at some point down the road, but I'm going to try the bare-bones set up to start.

Now the only thing left to do is pick the colour. :D

Was that photo of the front, back or side?
