First ever multitool

Hi folks,

Just got my first multitool today - a Swisstool X from Victorinox. After a fair bit of research online, I decided it would fit my purposes better than a leatherman, particularly given that it will be used in a marine type environment and therefore needs to be very rust resistant. So far I've only done a few light jobs around the house, but I'm really impressed with it. Its built really solidly and feels great in the hand.

I know how you feel. I have a Leatherman Juice S2 that is in my pocket all day every day. It is amazing the amount of work that it does for me. It is a bit small but the tools are nice. The scales do not snag in my pocket.

I went with the smaller one because I did not want a sheath hanging off my belt.

I got a Leatherman Micra for a gift. I lost it at the Guatemala airport when I forgot to pack it in my luggage and I had it in my pocket. The person who gave it to me offered to replace it but I wanted one a bit bigger so I bought this one.

I do not think I will ever go back to carrying just a folding blade.

I have a Spirit and a regualr Swisstool. They are excellent, but I think I'd prefer the X due to its scissors.

Congrats!

If you are like me, and others on this forum, the Swiss Tool won't be your only multi-tool. They tend to multiply rather quickly. :D

Once I got my first multi, I was amazed how many times I used it per day. How did I ever live without one?

@jh205,

Good job on the research and great choice on the Vic STX! I EDC one myself and find it bomb-proof and built like a tank. It also gets wet ocassionally (I live in the tropics), but water doesn't bother the tool one bit. I also have the older ST, and it is still tight as a drum even after heavy use on the field. I managed to dull the serrated blade on my first ST by cutting cable sheath, so I removed the serrations completely. And, with just a few strokes on a benchstone, the blades are shaving sharp again. =)

Yeh, I gave a fair bit of thought to the standard ST vs the ST-X (serrated blade vs scissors) issue, ultimately deciding on the scissors. The tool's main use will be on and around my catamaran, as well as general jobs around the house and on the occasional fishing trip. Given that the blade on the tool is really only a back-up for my main knife (currently a Delica, soon to be a Pacific Salt) I figured a third blade would be redundant, whereas the scissors would probably prove fairly useful.

Also, I was wondering if anyone has any experience with the Maxpedition single sheath, as I need to carry the tool horizontally on my PFD. In particular, how strong is the closure system on these sheaths?

Cheers,

J.

The SwissTools are great. If yours came with the Cordura sheath like mine did, ditch it and upgrade to the nylon sheath. You can buy the nylon sheath with velcro for $12. off Ebay. The cordura sheath is garbage and the snap is prone to failure resulting in a lost tool. Also, the belt strap on the cordura sheath is too thin allowing the sheath to sag away from your belt. The cordura sheath does'nt stay in one place on your belt and wanders, thanks to the flimsy belt loop.

I have the Maxpedition sheath. It's a big mofo. The tool is secure in it, but there's also a lot spare room.
The factory Victorinox nylon sheath won't allow for horizontal carry.

As an alternative to the maxpedition, the nylon sheath for a Leatherman Surge will also fit your Swisstool X. It can be mounted horizontally. The velcro closure is quite secure, but still allows rapid access.

Do the swiss tools have the same blade that a normal sak has?

The blades on my swisstool are slightly longer, say 1/4'' or so,and considerably thicker than the cellidor models but not as thick at the base of the blade as a alox farmer etc.

I recently got a Surge sheath for my Swisstool. It had come with a nice leather sheath that was for horizontal wear only, but I didn't care for it - I like wearing it vertically.
