Found what looked like a chunk of the stuff on one of the last hikes. Boy #2 and I cut it up tonight and played around cutting some curls.

I dont know what it is about fatwood, but once i found it myself the first time i was hooked. Ive got loads of it and still enjoy finding it as if i dont. Check out bushman's blog about it. He's not addicted or nothin. ;)

Nice fatwood score! There is something really nice about being able to find it on your own.

I plan to harvest some this weekend. Lots of downed and dead trees where we're going, including pine and cedar.

Its nice isn't it? Taking off old dead lower limbs right at the base of the trunk will often yield a quarter size x 1"or 2" piece of resin that is enough to start a fire going.

An empty altoids tin is a great thing to have in your pocket. I'm always shoving bits of tinder and fluff into mine as I come across it. When I go to start a fire in my stove, I have everything I need.

I'm not trying to rain on your parade. This is a piece of fatwood 1066vik and Mr. S harvested at the ESEE Fest.

well, yeah - but after processing some of it we had the worlds best bonfire that night. :)

Never tried starting a fire with fatwood....not much chance I think of finding it around here though! dryer lint I have in abundance! Is the fatwood that much better?

yes.....it is....dryer lint takes a spark well but does not burn long....fatwood is filled with oil...it burns long and hot for a while....also where are you in texas...i can't think of many places in texas where it can't be harvested....Drew

Holy shnikeys, now that's the mother load of fatwood! I also like the fact that it gets my boys off the xbox and working on something. Good times.

We were in Tx when Mr S discovered this baby. Took what we could carry and left some behind. Look for storm killed pines, chip past the rotting outer layers and if you hit a hard, waxy core, that's it! Other possible sources are pine knots, pine/fir branches that were trimmed last season and left to dry, 6 month old x-mas trees, etc...

I did not cry those were manly tears of sweat! plus i like my hair on my head not floating around as ash!
