Been a knife guy for a long time.
Have a goodly amount of Bucks.
Never owned an assisted opening knife before this afternoon.
I didn't know much about them.
Never handled one.
This afternoon the Fed Ex guy brings me a Buck Sirus (297 w/ Eagle). I open up the box, look at the Sirus and say "OK...looks very well made. I don't know how to open it---better read the instructions."
I read the instructions. See and understand where the safety is. I release the safety. Glance over the rest of the opening instructions.
Two things did not sink in (Surely my fault--not Buck's).
1) Hold knife in one hand---I was holding it in 2 hands.
2) Push the release button which is located above the safety.
So, holding it in both hands (and having no clue with which the velocity that the blade comes out) I push down on the thumb stud--why? Not really sure.
So, what happens? The blade comes out with speed surprising to me....and the tip of the blade catches the entire palm of my left hand (as I am right handed) as it opens. You can say that it sure suprised me and scared me a little. Fortunately the tip just contacted my skin ever so lightly---so lightly that there was no cut or blood just a faint line. Now in my infinite wisdom I closed the knife and put the safety on and decide another read of the instructions is a real good idea.
Did I perhaps, touch the release button while I was pushing down on the thumb stud--quite possibly. I tried to repeat the process, careful to hold the knife with only one hand. And by just pushing down on the thumb stud I never got it to open again. Satisfied that it must have been me, I continued to check out the Sirus and open and close it repeatedly and get a feel for it.
Thanking God that I did not slice the palm of my hand, as the price of being stupid. I examine the knife and I must say I really like it. Feels extremely well made and solid. And I am glad I ordered it and I think it will make a fine addition to the EDC rotation. I also have a Rush back ordered that was expected to come with the Sirus.
My purpose for telling this long winded story is not to show how dopey I was. But to let any other AO virgins whom may order an assisted opening knife, without ever handling one----know that they need to be cautious, read and UNDERSTAND the instructions fully, know that there is quite some velocity associated with the opening, never hold it with 2 hands if you may open it and as always, respect it.
