I have a couple nice axes but my small collection lacked anything vintage, today I set out on a mission to remedy this. I have looked here and there but never really tried. Today every corner of the fleamarket was searched and after looking at about 20 heads I finally come across this true temper/kelly works Vulcan. It isn't the museum piece I see on here but i'm pretty happy about it. The guy had it marked fifty bucks and I was debating on what to do when he comes up and says "nice axe eh". I said "its alright but not for 50 bucks" he says "what do ya think its worth?". I give it another once over and come back with "30 bucks". "35 and its yours". "Done:D" It wont be a resto project as the handle is pretty good and I almost think it might be the original. I added picks to show the thin profile, let me know what ya'll think. Just gonna resharpen it and lightly sand and oil the handle. Notice also in the first pic the vise marks, think I can sand these out or would I do more harm than good?

That's a good axe and it will clean up well. $35 is a little more than I would pay for it but if it's got a nice handle then you did OK. You can't buy a new full-sized axe of that quality any more.

Thanks Peg, I realize I paid more than it might be "worth" but for me it was a good deal. First I can't walk into a store around here and buy a decent haft and second this area doesn't really have a logging history and good axes are hard to come by. I've let a couple junkers in the area know i'm looking for axes so maybe some better deals will start to come my way.
