Hello all, I am looking to purchase my first fixed blade, and have narrowed it down to either the Buck Woodsman, or the Kabar Little finn. I was wondering what your experiences were with either and which one you would recommend.

Thanks, also would either be adequate to field dress a deer?

I have a Case Finn that I am really fond of, but I don't know about Kabar as a brand because I have never owned one. (Some people on the forums swear by them, though.) They both seem like decent knives. And, as far as field dressing a deer, both of these knives are very much equipped for it. There was a man on the forums that field dressed an alligator with a Case Peanut and several more that have done the same to some deer.

Buck Woodsman, 7.75" long overall, comes with a nice leather sheath, and it was made with Buck's legendary 420HC steel that takes an edge and keeps it.

Kabar Little Finn, 7" long, just says stainless steel, so I am guessing its 440c, comes with a sheath I don't know anything about. Who knows, that could be the knife for you, I'd go with the Buck myself, only because I have owned Buck before and I know they are reliable for anything you put them through. Hope this helps, Jerry.

Appreciate the joke but let's keep the links to ebay per the guidelines to avoid unnecessary issues from cropping up in the forum.

KaBar.com says the Little Finn is "DIN 1.4116 ss" at RC53-55. I'm not familiar with that steel; maybe some others will know more about it.

If it was 40 years ago, I'd go with the little finn.

But time has changed things. The Buck woodsman is a heck of a good knife, and I have to admit, I used the heck out one as a general outdoors knife from the late 60's to the late 90's. In 1999, my better half plopped a new one down in front of me, and said my old one needed to be retired as it was looking like a sheathed toothpick. The new one is actually as good a knife or better than the old one.

Given a modern day little finn in True Sharp, or the Buck 102, I go with the Buck woodsman.

Now if I can get a 1950's little finn in carbon steel...

Thanks for the input, I was leaning more towards the Buck anyways, but i really like the looks of the stacked leather handle on the little finn, do any of you know if buck made the woodsman with a stacked leather handle?
