First fixed blade sheath

Well I finall got around to making my first fixed blade sheath. I have done a few folder sheaths but this was a whole other beast. My brother wanted some pants for his Scrapyard 1311 so I worked something up. I wanted to try and go a little fancy. I used Elephant for the inlay and overlays. That stuff is seriously tough. I'm not sure you could scratch it without a knife. Then added a pouch for a medium sized altoids tin. All in all I am pretty happy with how it worked out. There are a few things I would do differently next time but a great learning experience and it was a lot of fun to do. It is 7 layers of 7-8oz thick at its thickest point at he belt loops and man was seeing it a lot of work. Obviously had to drill the holes but still broke a few needles sewing it all up. Let me know what you guys think as it wouldn't be possible without the help you guys on here offer up so freely. Thanks for everything.
Sorry for the bad lighting in the first two pics. The final picture is what the colors really look like.

Well, it's a really nice job for your first effort. I'm a little curious about the need for 7 layers of equal thickness leather. A generous dose of skiving here and there could have reduced that thickness considerably, and made your stitching a lot easier. Your stitching, by the way, looks very good.

I wanted the sheath to be the same thickness as the handle of he knife and I prefer an even look verses using a ramp or wedge up by the mouth. Really just preference. And it's only 6 layers at the mouth. Just 7 with the belt loops.

It sounds like you HAND sew'ed it... Excellent job!

I have an industrial walking-foot sewing machine that I do nylon gear and webbing on, but I have yet to do leather work on it. I know people use them for leather, but not to the thickness you did, I think...

But you have inspired me to try one soon, as the weather warms and my shop is not so cold...

Thanks and Yes it is hand sewn. Get out there and give it a try.

Nice work!
Could you post a pic of the back side as well?
I'm dreading the day I'll need to make a sheath for knife longer than 8", working on 13" as your first must have been a challenge.

Thanks!

Did you run the overstitching wheel over the holes at the back? It helps to keep the thread straighter.

How's that attachment method working? I guess with such a blade heavy knife it doesn't 'flop'.

Very nice! - I have only done old school sheaths and my next project is a combination sheath to include a flashlight.
