Hello from Washington!
I occasionally browse threads to see what's new or interesting, but I'm not exactly what I'd consider a hardcore knife guy. I decided to join yesterday because I'm in new and unknown territory and hope some of you can help. I've been carrying a Benchmade Griptilian for the last 12 years. Drop point, 154CM, light duty use, nothing out of the ordinary, but my first "real" knife and I still love it. The 20 years before that, I carried a few Victorinox models. Again, nothing fancy, they just worked for me. I was thinking about trying the sheepsfoot version of my Griptilian but ended up taking a hard right turn a week ago and I'm not sure what happened. I now have a pair of Bradford Guardians, a sheepsfoot and a wharncliffe, and a bunch of questions. Both are tumbled Vanadis 4E. Both have contoured micarta scales, kydex sheaths, and either will replace my Griptilian for daily carry and mundane use.
What are your experiences with switching from a folder to a small fixed blade for the first time?
What are your experiences with Vanadis 4E?
What are your experiences with moderately textured micarta scales?
Any specific maintenance requirements or recommendations for either?
Do scales need to be removed for cleaning/oiling the tang underneath?
Recommended sharpener for this steel or blade size? I'm a complete novice and will need practice prior to attempting anything on these.
Preferred carry locations, positions, and attachment methods?
I thank and blame you all in advance!
