I am pretty new into the knife world and was looking into buying a fixed blade preferrably 6+ inches. I have a couple of folding knives, but now was looking for something that could take alot of abuse outdoors. I have been researching a little bit on some fixed blade knives and the cold steel recon scout initially caught my eye, but seems to be getting unfavorable reviews. Some say the handle rapidly deteriorates and rusting is possible underneath the handle. Ignoring this, I found a new recon scout on sale for about $50. Is this worth the money or should I spent a little more on a better knife (under $100)?

thanks.

You should consider the Becker line of knives. They are supposed to be quite good.

This one is less than $50

Also look at Ranger Knives for a step up from there.

My favorite outdoor knife is the Ontario SP-6 at 8" or the SP-1 at 7" .
If you need a wood-chopper the Beckers are very good. The "Brute" is even bigger at 9".
The 7" Camillus USMC knife is another beauty.
Use a pocket-knife for the smaller chores.

You wont have any problems with the Recon Scout and $50.00 is a great deal for this very stout knife but the BK7 is a better design and lighter weight.

I was about an 8 year old cubscout and we had folders and small leather handled fixed blades for use when we went camping. Some of us had a combination sheath that held either a large and small fixed blade or a fixed blade and a hatchet. Rest of us just had our Boy Scout folders with can opener, etc. We were taught how to carry and sharpen them before we were allowed to have them. I can't recall ever having any accidents or issues.

This is sort of what they looked like.

I think today the nutty Bark River guys from Bark River Knife Company in Michigan make one of the best hunting/camping fixed blades. The only problem with them is that they grind them with a convex edge which makes them very sharp. I would never buy one without a blade guard.

Bark River Knife & Tool makes knives that are not only stout & sturdy, but nice-looking too, sort of traditional.

If you want to stay with the tactical stuff that these guys suggested, then look at Swamp Rat knives.

Peace.

The Spyderco Temperance (FB05) is an excellent knife, as are many of the Benchmade fixed-blades.

Thanks guys for all your help. I have looked up alot of the knives mentioned and now am having problem choosing which one to get. I guess now it comes down to personal preference. :)
