First Fixed Blade

Hey folks, I am in the market for my first fixed blade and believe I have it narrowed down to 3 knives. Your job, should you choose to accept it, is to help me decide which I should order. The 3 contenders are...

Fallkniven S1, Rat Cutlery RC-5 and Scrapyard Scrapper 5.

I would like to have it soon, so I am leaning away from the Scrapper, since judging by their site it might be some time before I receive it, but if it is hands down the best of the bunch I suppose I could wait it out. The other down side on the Scrapper is no sheath included, but it is the cheapest of the bunch too, so not a biggie.

My main use will be as my hiking/camping "large knife". I generally carry a saw and a folder (short hikes a hatchet as well), so chopping would be minimum, hence not going with a longer blade.

Cheers!

Dan

If you are like the most of us, you will eventually end up buying all three, plus a few extra to boot, so it doesn't much matter which one you start with.

So long as you don't plan to do much chopping, I don't believe you can go wrong with a Fallkniven S1 (otherwise I'd recommend an A1). Fallkniven's laminated VG10 blades are outstanding.

I can tell you from experience that the S1 is an outstanding knife and it will not disappoint. Fallkniven is top tier for production knives.

I can't speak directly to the RAT RC-5, but I can tell you I have heard enough postive feedback on the RAT product here on BF that I have an RC-4 on order to try it out (my first choice was also the RC-5, but couldn't find one with a plain edge blade)

There are many other excellent choices out there as well, but you have picked 3 excellent candidates for your camp knife.

The Fallkniven and the Rat will both be available well into the future. I recommend getting the Scrapper 5, even if it's going to be a few weeks before shipment yet. The reason is... once it's off the Scrapyard site it will no longer be available except on the secondary market. If you end up not liking it, you could most likely sell it for AT LEAST what you have in it, probably a little more.

You can pick up the others any time.

That had crossed my mind, and I have heard no negative feedback on any of the knives. It is just a hard choice to make :(

The RC-5 is sort of redundant if you will carry a folder, saw, and/or hatchet. I'd pick the RC-4 (for actual realistic use) or RC-6 instead. The 4 and 6 are much thinner than the 5 and better for cutting vs. chopping.

being a huge rat fan, i say the rc5. or the 6, i prefer the rc6. fallkniven would be nice too though

All three are good choices.

I'm a die hard scrap yard fan so I vote for the s5. The mudder handles feel really good in the hand and the steel holds a great edge. Great warranty. Oh and your name is Dan, same as the boss at scrap yard. :D And you get to choose from like 14 different colors. Once they are gone, you never know when they come back, thus they are always in demand and sell higher then their original price.

I'm also a big fan of rat-cutlery, mike and jeff are two of the coolest guys. Easy to contact, fast to respond, and just really good people. No questions asked warranty! The RC-5 however is a little thick in my opinion, .25" is what I like to see in choppers, then again it'll take a lot of abuse. I think a RC-4 would work better for you.

I don't own any fallkniven knives, but I've handled some and they are nice. I'll tell you right now that they come with the best edges compared to the other companies, but I own a belt sander and convex everything on my own anyways.

I'd get the scrapper now...won't be offered again after that, but you could pay the high after market price.

Oddly enough I found a RC-4 for cheap on the exchange and picked it up first. Wasn't one of my first picks, but so far so good.

I am probably going to order one of the Scrap Yard knives as well if I can come up with $100 before they close ordering.

Someone mentioned that I would end up buying all three sooner or later, somehow I think that is the truth. :D

Thanks for all the input guys!

the s1 and the rc-5 are great knives but I dont think they can compare to the scrapyard knives.

I think they can. The lack of a full tang make scrapyard knives a no go for me.

Do not let that stop you. You've seen this video destruction test? http://knifetests.com/scrapyardscrapper6test.html

And if you do manage to destroy it's covered by the warranty. Also, the current scrap yard offering, the Scrapper 5 was just pulled off the site so ordering is closed. The LE version (satin blade) should be offered soon.
