Hey guys, I just got into knives and have bought nothing but folders so far.
After I pick up a Spyderco Military I think I'm going to try out a fixed blade.
I'm thinking about getting an ESEE RC-4. Anything that you think would be better Thats around the same size and price.

From all that i hear, you can't go wrong with an RC 4. also check out the fallkniven F1. That is also incredibly popular.

What do you guys think of the Ontario Rat 5 compared to this knife?

I'd say absolutely get the ESEE-4 as opposed to the RAT-5. The ESEE-4 comes with a kydex sheath, a bulletproof no-questions-asked warranty and the assurance that the knife is so good, you may never have to cash in on that warranty.

Seriously, man, the heat treat on an ESEE is just so good. I've had my ESEE-6 for about a month and a half, used it to split wood on 3 different outings, and it's still hair-shaving sharp. Also, you'll just be amazed with the fit-and-finish quality of ESEEs. I know I am.

But, that being said, I'd tell you to get a Becker for your first fixed-blade. They're just good hard-use knives. And they're cheap, too.

Alright, This Esee 4 is hypnotizing me. I think I'm going to order it right now. Maybe it's just the beer. I think I'm going to order it and then post in the drunkin knife ordering thread. :p  :D

From what I've been able to ascertain, kydex isn't exactly "better" than the plastic they use to injection mold the sheaths on other knives, and the the plastic sheaths will actually have a tigther fit because they're molded to the blade shape.

I haven't handled either, but the 5 seems like a completely different knife. Thicker blade, saber grind instead of FFG, and was designed by SERE instructors to be a downed-pilot's survival knife and survive whatever beating you can throw at it. So it's probably not really fair to even compare the 4 and the 5.

Stick with the ESEE RC4. The manufacturers support and interaction with the end user here at Bladeforums is top notch. They stand behind their product.

ESEE 4, great knife, also the Cold Steel Recon Scout is another great knife just a little cheaper than the ESEE and bigger.

Definitely go with ESEE instead of Ontario. They're not all that much more expensive, considering the upgrade in quality and customer service you'll get. After all, Jeff Randall left Ontario and started ESEE because he wasn't satisfied with the quality control his knives were being produced with.

Bark River Aurora, Canadian or Bravo-1 are also excellent choices.

How and where do you plan to use it?

It's a shame your excellent question seems to have been ignored entirely! :D

"Better" is entirely dependent on the application.

A Case Peanut is not "better" than a Tramontina machete, or vice versa.
