My buddy is looking to get his boy his first fixed and is targeting $40... I am pretty sure he wants scales on the blade, so things like BK11 don't fit the bill as the scales are extra...
For a 12 year old, the Gerber all the way. Let him beat the hell out of it for 20 bucks. It's a decent blade and the kid will learn how to keep and use a knife.
not sure if this fits your description but most moras are only 10-15 dollars. both carbon and stainless are easy to sharpen and can take quite the beating.
Check out the Gerber Big rock. Its around 30 and from what I have heard one heck of a value. I'll probably try to pick on up myself one of these days. Should be a good beginners blade.
Mora is a GREAT knife and they are very inexpensive and much sturdier than one would expect. Condor makes a lot of good stuff for a good price so they are worth looking at.
Mora all the way. Its cheap, but very reliable. And I also agree with Yo Mama (hehe) about letting him beat the hell out of a Gerber. But if you want great quality, and youre willing to spend maybe $10- $20 more than your price range, Ka Bars or a Buck 119 would work well.
Schrade sharpfinger, or the Kershaw Skinning knife, or field knife. Though I'd recommend the Skyline fixed blade. A little over 3" blade, you can get it in either orange, or black scales, and it's $30. And someone right now in the Kershaw subforum is cutting down a tree with one right now, so obviously it's pretty strong. Go here
