I am looking for my first flipper knife. I am between these knives. I would be using this for house use, and flipper enjoyment.

I am talking about the cheaper Walmart larger Ripple that is comparable in price to the others.

The RAM is the most expensive and might be hard to find soon, is it worth it?

I know I like the Skyline but the extra $$ won't matter if it's worth an upgrade at all.

All input is appreciated, thank you!

I would say go with the RAM.
It's a little more money, but you get what you pay for. It's a little bigger than the skyline, and the ergos are far superior in my opinion. However, I have a certain fondness for the Skyline.
For a rock solid edc go with the RAM....for a no frills super light edc... The skyline is the way to go...

If you can, get both, both are a home run from Kershaw

Yes, definitely. One of the best production flippers IMO. Sooooo smooth, unique design/lock and just all around GREAT knife.

EDIT: The RAM also has multiple open methods that work just as well as the next, where as the skyline and ripple are dedicated flippers.

First off, congrats on the start to your knife addiction. I just started not too long ago :P

I enjoy using some of CRKT's knife. They tend to be a little more unique with their design but I feel Kershaw produces a much better blade in many cases.

How much are you looking to spend?

If you're willing I think the Blue Kershaw Skyline that BladeForums is selling. It's $90, I beleive a limited edition and supports the forums. If you pre-order you get a year of Gold Membership.

So I'd recommend for your first flipper in terms of quality would be the Skyline with S30V blade if you are looking for a more affordable on then the RAM is around $60 and will serve your purpose just fine.

The ripple looks interesting but I think it would be less useful.

If you compare the lower quality steel in a different Skyline to the RAM I'd go with the ram but if you are going to get S30V then I'd get the Bladeforums Skyline.

1 - Bladeforums S30v Skyline
2 - RAM
3 - Skyline
4 - Ripple

I have the 3 RAMs, 1 skyline, and 1 Ripple....So the RAM would have to get my vote. I love the lockup and the super fast deployment. Also I like the choil that you get without really losing much cutting length. It carries a little deeper in the pocket than the other two as well. And lastly it is discontinued so it will be hard to find at some point so I would get it first and then later get the other two if you still want them.

the Skyline has thumb studs as well. it would be my choice because its so light.

Yeah but they're designed as the stop pin for the blade when open; not for opening. The RAM, you can use the studs, use the flipper, pull back the lock and use a little wrist action, etc. My point being, you have options with the RAM, not so with the other 2.

I use the thumb studs on the skyline all the time. They are way faster than the flipper.

i have a First Production Ripple... i don't use it cause i don't like the size (probably gonna trade it away) but it's silky smooth and if i didn't know better i'd swear it was assisted

So sh00ter01, you would recommend a RAM over the BladeForums Skyline as well? For pure flipper fun?

The RAM is appealing because it seems I can flip open and shut pretty easily with one hand. The Skyline you definitely need to be more deliberate when closing the knife.

I was thinking of adding custom scales from here, http://www.phillipdobson.com/Knife_Handles.html

so all in all the price would be the same. The RAM can be had from Amazon for <$50 right now.

Get the RAM it's truly awesome. The locking mechanism makes flipping it out as smooth and fast as any assisted opener I've ever handled. It has great ergos as well and it is now discontinued so just grab one and give it a try.

Don't forget about the Kershaw Zing...

Of the three you listed, the RAM is the best flipper. It is a joy to play with. FUN!!
