My first folder is nearly finished! I was just going to post when it was done but I got too excited and wanted to get some initial comments/criticisms/critique. This will be my first knife (along with a fixed blade im doing) that will be properly finished and heat treated. I've made a couple of fixed knives before out of scrap material to get a feel for it.

The blade is RWL 34 stainless, The liner is sheet stainless and the handle scales are wengee.

Thanks in advance. Also a lot of thanks to Eric (Ochs) for talking me through a lot of it.

Sorry for the bad light in the photos.

I really like the lines on the folder. Looks great!

I also like the look of the wenge. I've done some work with it (a couple knife handles and other stuff) and while the splinters can be horrendous, the finished look is really cool with the bold grain.

Keep 'em coming!

Tim,
Wow, I like the new folder, you are off to a good start here. I like the looks of the tanto too. I have never used straight RWL 34 but I would think it is pretty good from my experience using Damasteel. Update me on your progress as you can, I am happy to have contributed in some small way, and keep up the good work!

Thanks for the kind words. I've used wengee a little bit in my job as a furniture maker but im yet to get a splinter from it :D i'm sure it hurts just as much as the others though haha.

Thanks Eric! I can't really tell you if RWL 34 is good to work with because i haven't exactly had much experience. It seemed agreeable enough though. It was probably a little bit easier than the D2 in the tanto.

Tim.

Everything sanded up ready to go to HT. I'll post tomorrow then just sit and wait...actually i've already started making 2 other knives out of the off cut from the fixed tanto. It's fun just working with the shape that's left from an off cut. Who knows what they would be used for though. I didn't take a picture of the other one yet. It's a scalpel...looking...thing.

Broke the acrylic spine, gonna have to make another one.
Ready to go.

To be honest the whole folder could have been executed better. Everything works how it should, there's just room for improvement in everything. The lock works well but there's a bit of blade play up and down because one of the stop pins are a little off. The handle scales are a bit chunky because i didn't have any countersunk screws so i had to countersink into the scales instead limiting how thin i could make the scales. The grind is a bit shallow because well it was pretty much my first attempt. The thumb stud was rushed and i didn't really think about positioning and it's a bit small (uncomfortable to open).

So i don't think i'll bother trying to re-work the grind because the whole thing needs re-working. I'll just leave it as an average first attempt and try again some time now i have more screws etc.

Here's some pictures anyway.

Thanks,

Dude. Don't beat yourself up. Just learn from the small details that didn't turn out right. On the plus side, the fit of your lock looks really good.
With each knife you want to improve just a little over the previous one. It can be very addicting.
Start making another folder with the design changes that you want. Each one will be better.
