First Forged Knife. Feedback?

My Autistic son expressed an interest in knife making. So being the "Leap before you even think about looking" type of person, I bought some fire bricks, a torch and got a broken tombstone for use an an anvil.

We heated and straightened some rings cut from a broken garage door spring. We heated the metal and pounded the general shape. Then ground off the "blade" portion.

Heat treatment is a guess from threads on here: Heated to red then quenched in wax and oil mix. Tempered in a toaster oven to 400F for two hours.

We would like your feedback and opinions.

Thanks.

It's really simple but I like it a lot. I hope you had fun making it and I hope you'll make some more. Forging can be a blast. Thanks for sharing.

cool, good on ya!

Good for you and your son. Keep hammering and keep doing these projects with your son. Great family time. I wish my 12 year old had some interest other than video games.

Very cool - I see LOTS of broken garage door springs daily
Good for you and your son - recycling at its best
