And I love it!!! :D :D

Used up 3 gallons of free oil in about 4 1/2 hours of forging. After the burner comes up to temp (about 10 minutes) I found it's a freaking monster for heating. 1/8" 1084 was back to forging red in 1 minute or so, 3/16" 1084 for a bowie was a little over a minute. If you build one get ready to swing the heck out of the hammer. :D

Awesome....I am going to start getting all the parts set up to build me one...

Do you think it gets to welding heat or will it need some different adjustments for that.

Bruce

I would think it should get to welding heat since they smelt iron in the same forge. This is why I am intending on using it as an augmentation to my forge and not the sole source of fuel.I really need to get this thing up and running. Maybe this week????? I hope.. Have to finish the salt pot too before I get my salts.

Bruce, it definately comes up to welding heat.... I know it will make a sparkler if you're not paying attention

I'm using a 1/4" od piece of brass pipe for a nipple on the bucket, if you really wanted to do welding I'd go with a larger od outlet on the bucket.

Great....I was just wondering out loud.I figured it would get to welding but thought I would ask...

Now I cant wait to get mine up and running, since i have went back to work at the scrap yard I will be able to find everything I need...

Bruce

Will, CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!! Can you post specifics or pictures with pictures of the burner and drip setup PLEASE?

Sam, here's a link to my earlier thread when I was building the forge:

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Bruce, you may want to build the full on "The Brute" burner using 2" id pipe instead of the 1 1/2" I used and a larger blower, I'm not sure how many cfm mine's kicking out but if I was going to do a lot of welding I'd probably get a bigger blower.

Thanks Will....I just want to be able to weld when I want to as most of what I want to do any more is just straight carbon, but I love to weld also....

Thanks again,
Bruce

Very cool thanks Will, do you find that if you had ALOT of CFM it would work better, or does it have to be tuned with the oil flow to work just right, I have a small blower and a large and could use either one. Looks great and very simple, I am keen to see just what it can do. Again thanks for showing this as you built it.

Sam,

You have to play with the fuel/air mix. The reason I'd like a bigger blower is that I can turn a big one down but can't turn a small one up beyond it's max :)

The way I adjust the fuel is I turn the fuel up until I see it spattering in the forge body then I turn down the air, my logic is that I'm blowing the fuel past the ignition source (hot burner tube). The other way I adjust it is to turn up the fuel until I get some black smoke then kick the air up on it (not recommended if you have neighbors or a fiance that cares about smells :( )

It has to be simple... I'm a simple person or some people would argue simpleton :D

Will, Are you saying the blower you were using is to small? You sure got me thinking about building one. I sure don't expect to see propane coming down soon.

I'm not saying it's too small but if I was going to do a lot of welding I'd go with a 2" burner tube and larger blower. I used 1 1/2" tube because I had a smaller blower and figured I needed to size the tube to match the blower.

What kind of waste oil are you burning? Have you tried used motor oil? Does it smoke alot?

I drive a diesel truck, and get 4 gallons of used oil every time I change it. So does my dad. I probably have 20 gallons sitting around I could use if it would burn cleanly. I run propane right now, but hesitate to do too much playing around with the price of fuel :(

Hey Matt
I'm burning used motor oil right now... cool thing is I can just dump any oil in there, old canola from HT or anything like that. The used motor oil will smoke until it comes up to self sustaining ignition (about 5 minutes or so), if you run it too rich and when you shut down if you don't run the fan until it all burns off (about 10-15 minutes.)

I live in a neighborhood and it's not as bad as burning coal as far as the offending the neighbor index is concerned.

Hi Will, did you get any pics yet??

Original, I linked to my original build thread, it has some pics of the forge during build and running. I'll be forging this weekend and will post some more pics of it burning steel.

Got a weird order from a customer.... going to be a PIA, I couldn't sway him from his design ideas :( ah well the freaking sheath is probably the biggest hassle in the whole deal. He's a good friend and if it's a freaky idea well he's a freak anyways :)
