Hello,

Just ordered my first Gransfors Bruks - small forest axe. Very excited to receive it soon. I have plenty of fixed blades and folders; but it's time to start using the right tool for the right job.
I've had Ontario survival hatchet for over 10 years but always found myself in need of more powerful tool. I also have the Estwing camping hatchet which I find really great for most of the small camping tasks.
Will post pics of my GB when I receive it.
Cheers!

Gransfors-Bruks makes good Axes! I have an older G-B Scandinavian Forest Axe, very similar to the one you're getting. I think it has a little longer handle? Both can do a day's work. You'll enjoy using the 'Small Forest Axe'.

A knife can be pressed into doing a lot of work its not necessarily intended to perform. Lord knows I've cut small trees down, batoned and processed the wood with a knife, pried open cans, boxes, ammo cans, etc. In general, I've abused my knives over the years. It's why, if nothing else, I always have a knife around. But, a properly made Axe can make many of those tasks much easier and safer. I carry my G-B Scan. Forest Axe in the trunk of my car. Just in case.

Let us know your thoughts when it arrives. I'm pretty sure you'll be happy with your purchase.

Well, it arrive today!

I immediately shaved some hair off my arm with just to see if it's true what "they" say.
I split a couple of small 4" diameter logs that I had laying around and so far I am very pleased. I will put it through some more work the weekend.

Nice looking axe. I liked the polished edge and especially the fact that it shaves :). Hand forged from Sweden I assume?

Congratulations! I'm glad you got out there and 'christened' your new Axe. Have you looked up the Blacksmith who made your Axe? The Maker's initials look to be "MB". I don't have my Axe Book in front of me or I'd help.

Enjoy it in good health.

Thank you!
I have the axe book: MB=Mattias Blixt
Very cool that the blacksmith puts his initials on the head.

Excellent! This tool should outlast you and several generations, thereafter. A hand-forged tool that can be passed down to your children and then to their children speaks to me on a bunch of different levels. "I split some wood with Grampa's old Axe." Sounds good to me.

If, you want to make your handle (Haft) 'purdy', I'd take a piece of four-ought (#0000) steel wool and burnish the wood. Then maybe a couple of coats of Linseed oil. It should help protect the wood and help bring out the grain.
