Received my first GEC today. A Misouri trapper. This is the nicest knife I have ever owned. Very solid and beautiful fit. The bone just melts into the metal. I bought a few case knives last week and this blows them away in style. My question is what can be done about opening it? I only have one remaining fingernail. The others were sacrificed getting it open for the pic.:)

Flush the joint and oil it well.

Then, work it open and closed for a while.

This will considerable soften and smooth the pull.

You can also leave the knife open partially (so the square tang is not sitting flush and letting the spring rest).

Or you can send it to me. I will carry and use it for about 6 months and when you get it back it will be grey, and open much softer.

You picked a real winner for your first!

That is a nice knife that you chose. Enjoy. I have a #56 dogleg jack with the same scales. When I got it I was a little unhappy because it was so hard to open. As already mentioned tho, washing and lubricating the joint followed by a week or two of use and it is now just about perfect.
