First grinder, last grinder...

I like to ask questions that immediately demonstrate the sheer magnitude of my ignorance šŸ˜Ž, case in point: I would like to buy a variable speed 2x72 grinder with the idea in mind that It may be the first and last grinder I buy during what I’ve always been assured will be my short lifetime. I would like a versatile machine but would like to be able to do deep hollow grinds on larger blades (so maybe a 14ā€ wheel right out of the gate?) I would especially love something that runs quiet compared to other machines. This is a cry once proposition of course, so with all that in mind, what makes and models should I be looking at? I’ve never been a rich man but I have a few boxes of 9mm ammo to sell so obviously my fortunes are about to change. If it’s in the cards for me I would love to be grinding for less than $5k, but if not I have very good therapist that would be willing to work with me through the inevitable trauma.

Thanks for your input, it’s truly appreciated.

I have made knives for over 40 years, I have four TW-90's. If I started over I would buy another TW-90. I can't imagine anything any better.

Tom, do you run a 14ā€ wheel on any of your machines? I don’t see one on his site. Also how would you say the operating volume (db) compares to other similar machines. Thanks you.

Most of the top end machines are pretty quite now days. They vibrate very little, which is the main cause of the noise.
You can use any compatible 14" wheel. Many places sell them. They aren't cheap, but just like grinders, you usually get what you pay for.

I'll chime in for the KMG TX. First "real" grinder I've ever owned. Really impressed with it so far. Just received the small wheel attachment which I'll break in this weekend.
THE VARIABLE SPEED!!!!!!!!!!!

I do use a 14" wheel on my TW-90 grinders. As far as noise I would say it compares to a Bur King. Maybe the TW-90 is a bit quieter.

I recently bought a Brodbeck grinder with all of the accessories, and I couldn’t be happier. I like it better than any other grinder that I have used (including the TW90).

My short list prior to buy was:
-Brodbeck
-TW90
-Gibson 72 Deluxe (sold by Alex Steele)
-Wilmont Quattro
-Northridge

I like hardcore grinders.

I prefer them for kitchen knives which is what I primarily make. What kind of knives you make can have an impact on your decision. Meaning what attachments are available etc

I’ll second the Broadbeck comment. I have an OBM that has been fine for me but I just spent a few days in VA working with a friend on his new Boradbeck and I am seriously jealous.

Plus… They were awesome to work with. His old grinder bit the dust right before I was going to fly out so he needed a grinder ASAP. He had to drive out to their location to get it but they made it happen and were very cool through the whole process.
