First Hatchet?

I'm starting to shop around for hatchets and I'm not really sure where to start. I started to look at some bigger knives for backpacking and other similar activities but the more I thought about it a light hatchet just seemed like the better route to go. Any advice?

Gransfors Bruks is the creme of the crop but you might also want to check out Wetterlings, Husqvarna and Fiskars if you have budget concerns.

Thanks! I'm leaning towards the Wetterlings 16" hunting axe (for now)

You won't be disappointed ... I got the 16" for christmas and am totally impressed.
Still haven't had a chance to test it yet but the fit and finish is great.

Wetterlings is the company that appeals to me the most. Be sure to post a review when you get it.

I think I know what you're saying catspa (tell me if I'm wrong). I started getting into knives about a month ago and I haven't been able to stop! I'm afraid hatchets are just going to be more fuel for the fire!

That's exactly what I'm saying. You'll know you've got it bad when you have to build two sheds in your back yard, one for knife storage and one for hatchet storage.

Or you wake up one morning with the outline of a hatchet imprinted on your arm.

Or you start giving kindling away to all your neighbors because you're splitting more than you can burn up.

Or you check into this subforum every hour thinking maybe another member has posted pics of their new hatchet...

hey trenton, go for the 19 in wetterlings, same head and more leverage. Choke up if you want but the 3in makes no difference in weight and is a better axe imop.

I already ordered the 16" :/ But, thinking back to some of the other hatchets I have used in years past the 16" should be perfect for packing.

I get my wetterlings small hunting axe in today. This thing is freaking awesome. I love how there is no attempt (by wetterlings) to grind/cover up any mistakes. Everything besides where the edge was ground and sharpened is exactly the way it was when the finished forging it.

That Wetterlings is a great hatchet. I have a 13" or so size one as well as the 10" mini hatchet, which has the same head as the larger one. They are both fun and effective. You will get the hatchet fever going for sure now. I started with one Estwing, and now have about 7 of them, a couple of Norlunds including the double bit hatchet, a Timberline, a mini Vaughn, a mini L.L. Bean, a mini Craftsman, and that's just a start. Good luck and keep them coming.
