Well just completed my first heat treat of 1084. I broke a test piece and wanted to know if this is good grain structure or do I need to make adjustments.

Thanks
Mike

Cant promise this will work but worth a shot. Ultimately this was just a stock removal knife so I did one normalization cycle (approx 1600 degrees to black) I've seen debate whether or not this is required for store bought billet but figured rather safe then sorry. I then heated up to approx 1500 degrees then quenched in 128 degree canola oil. I did these steps for both the knife and the test steel. I broke the test steel and this is how it looked inside. Looking for opinions on if this is good grain. It skated a file well but I know that doesn't necessarily mean a good heat treat.

On imgur, you can right-click on your image and select "Copy image address". Then, paste that URL into the "Image URL" field after clicking on the picture icon in the editor. I've included your picture below.

Not in great focus, but that looks pretty good to me. Looks creamy, which is what it should be.
Use the custom search function in the stickies for grain structure, and someone posted a good pic of different grains earlier in the year.

Here is a photo showing different grain structures for reference. Welcome to the forum, your photo is quite blurry so it’s hard to see but you can compare to the above picture and see where you are at comparatively.
