Hi all. I just purchased my first HI khukuri-- an Ang Khola and please forgive a dumb question about shipping. The FAQs state that a DOTD is shipped from Nevada. If I purchased from the HI website, where would it be shipped from--the US or Nepal? Thanks.

Welcome Ray!
All Items are shipped from Yangdu in Nevada. Nothing is sent from Nepal to the customer. You should have your Ang Khola within about 4 days.

That's great news! I don't think I have the patience to wait for a package from overseas. And thank you for the prompt reply.

The Ang Khola arrived this morning and I am highly pleased. Both with the great service (very fast shipping) and also the excellent craftsmanship of the knife. In the past , I have hesitated to purchase a khukuri because the ones that I have handled seemed cheaply made, poorly balanced and had poor craftsmanship. The grind lines wandered and the blade flats were not flat. I thought that all khukuris were in this class.
This khukuri has changed my opinion about them. It is well balanced and the craftsmanship is excellent. A second khukuri is on the way and my wallet is hiding in the back of a closet, whimpering.

Welcome to the forum. If your wallet can handle it (which is rare this time of the year) there seem to be some great deals this week, still unclaimed.

I took two of the deals and saw a couple more that I would like, but unfortunately, I will have to wait. I ran out of my play money for this month.

Wow! you remind me of me ;). I too discounted the Kukri because all I had seen in the US about 20-30 years ago was non-Nepali Kukris that were low quality . But as you know now Himalayan Imports (HI) staff has committed themselves to high quality, tough designs.

Oh, as far as the wait time to get a HI Kukri, it is very short. I usually get mine in Alaska in about 3 to 5 days. The only time it takes longer is during Christmas season and for special orders. If you want a lighter/heavier knife, pink handles, exotic wood, etc. it could take two (2) months, more or less, to get a special order. This is logical though.

I have been interested in the Gurkhas and their weapons for a long time but until now have never been satisfied with the khukuris that I have found. This Ang Khola is beautiful but also a serious tool. I am waiting for the rain to go away so I can try it out in comparison with my other choppers.
BTW, my wife was born in Fairbanks.

Dunilggux, chin'an gheli to the forum. I am enjoying Alaska but I am not a Native Alaskan. Been here three (3) years working and eating beer battered Halibut. Ugly fish but taste real good.

Back on the thread, I love this true account of Gurkhas and their weapon:
gurkhas today.jpg
"The Gurkha is worthy of notice, if only for the remarkable weapon which they use in preference to any other. It is called the 'Kukri' and is of a very peculiar shape.

...In the hands of an experienced wielder this knife is about as formidable a weapon as can be conceived. Like all really good weapons, its efficiency depends much more upon the skill than the strength of the wielder, and thus it happens that the little Gurkha, a mere boy in point of stature, will cut to pieces a gigantic adversary who does not understand his mode of onset. The Gurkha generally strikes upwards with the kukri, possibly in order to avoid wounding himself should his blow fail, and possibly because an upward cut is just the one that can be least guarded against."

From Reverend Wood, 'Travels in India and Nepal' 1896

Welcome again Ray.

Shouldn't pictures of new toys be mandatory here? Seems to make sense to me.

When it comes to Kukri's I don't look anywhere else than HI. I've seen them at shows and various places but they just aren't the real deal, usually not even close.
I guess the only problem with pictures is it makes me want even more. These things are highly addictive.
