First HI Purchase

Well, after much review and re-review and comparisons and checking out each picture on the HI website about a hundred times (half the fun!), I finally decided on my first HI blade purchase, since first finding the site only a couple of weeks ago. I decided on the 21" Chitlangi.

I had assumed that I would get an AK for my first, since they are so strong, and was looking at the 18", but although it might sound silly, there was something about the Chitlangi blade that just spoke to me, and I like the idea of a longer blade that still stays around 2 pounds.

I assume that since it is a slightly larger blade that they will use wood for the handle as in the picture. I hope so, as I think that sets it off best. Next chance I get, I will probably get an AK, and then perhaps an M43 down the road. The M43 design looks very much like the blade forward design copied by Cold Steel and Blackjack which I like very much.

Oh, and I also loved the Uncle Bill Especial, and really liked the Yvsa Cherokee Special, and the BirGorkha Bowie, and about a doezen others.

Now I need to find out for future purchases what are the options, if any, for some carving or inlays on the handles. Nothing fancy, just something to set them off and personalize them a bit more.

Well, nothing earth-shattering, but wanted to let you all know what I picked. When it comes in I'll let you know how it looks, and find out if their is a way to tell which Kami worked on it, etc.

Thanks for all the info and feedback that led to this decision. It looks as if I will be putting my "normal" knife collecting budget on hold for a while as I check these out!

Regards,

Svashtar

You'll most likely wind up getting one of each. :) Congratulations for having had purchased the 21" Chitlangi!

I am waiting for my WW2 to arrive, at which point you will get a 'well i looked at the site and all the pictures, I like the 18 inch WW2 and plan on getting a 16 inc, followed by all the sirus, all the AK's' and listing the rest of the stock.

Resistance is futile. You have been assimilated.

That's been about the case with me. A 21" Chitlangi is a truly gorgeous Khukuri. You have all the nicest decoration available, plus the handle shape is beautifully done.

Overall, the 21" Chitlangi is probably the most beautiful of all the Khuks in that size range. I've seen two of them, on by Radu and one by Kumar. Both were very nicely rendered, and even though both were 21" Chitlangis, both Kamis crafted the khuks with their own unique styles. Radu's is more blade heavy and has greater blade presence, yet still looks sleek. Kumar's is sleeker looking, and balances a bit closer to the hand, so is a bit more agile.

I own the Radu one, my brother-in-law owns the one by Kumar. I think I'll have to get one made by Kumar to complement the one by Radu. Though both are 21" Chits, they are different enough that I consider them almost things apart.

and it was nice and sturdy. Traded it fer a MKII/M43 khuk from AC's acquisition, as I had not money at the time.

Definitely fancy, markings similar on the Sword of Shiva to the YCS.

Just think, you haven't even scratched the surface! You know when you;re in trouble (HIKV) when you hunt down models no longer made and buy/trade for them from other forumites. This secondary market can be fruitful in the quest for hard to obtain HI pieces.

Welcome to the Cantina Svashtar!!!!:D You will Love the 21" Chitlangi!!!! The one I have is one of my -go everywhere- khuk's!!!!:D

Thanks for the feedback! Question in response to something Don said about the different styles of the Kamis on the Chitlangi. Can you specify which Kami you would like to work on a blade when ordering? Or would you just email Uncle Bill and ask for a specific blade from that Kami?

Also, how do you know which Kami worked on your knife? Do they mark the blade personally, or is there some paperwork that gives the name of the creator?

Thanks for any info.

Later,

Svashtar

I'll wait until my 18" Bura arrives, and see if I also want a 21". The blade is really attractive; dynamic without moving if you will... A GS should be arriving soon, and I look foward to comparing the two as far as manueverability and balance are concerned. If any kukaholic reads this, and can elucidate on the differences of the 18" and 21", I'm all ears.

Yvsa; don't you also have an 18" Chitlangi? If not, I feel I have Chitlangi envy as well as a good case of H.I.K.V.! :D
