Hey Guys,

Relatively new to the forum but I have been a long time lover of knives. I am looking for some help/suggestions. In about two weeks I am going to be purchasing my first $500 or so knife. I have several Benchmades, Sypdercos, and Kershaws but I have never spent this much on a knife. This knife with be an everyday user. I will most likely be getting a combat troodon from microtech. I have long loved the Halo series and would like a 3 but the EDC of this knife would be difficult, and I think trying to find one in my price range might be difficult. My only thing is I hear so much about other high-end knives like Striders and Chris Reeves I am wondering if there might be something else in the price range you guys would suggest me take a look at. Size is not an issue as about half the week I carry a Benchamde Bedlam 8600. I would love to hear feedback on the Troodon vs Scarab as I have been going back and forth between these two. I just want to make sure I am not missing something I owe it to myself to take a look at.

Thanks!

Caleb

If you can wait a little while, I would recommend getting a custom. You could get a great one in your price range, and it would be to your specifications. Check out Jake Hoback's knives. They are really tough and just awesome looking as well. There are other great makers here too, that's just one I really like.

Light task. Opening boxes, cutting bagels. I work in an office. I would like something for general light everyday use and self defense. That is why I would be confident in an OTF or using something nicer like a Sebenza without worry of failure or damage.

Check out Alan Davis on the Makers section of the exchange under either folders or fb.

He made a custom folder for me in cpm m4 that is fantactic. You wouldn't have to spend $500 with Alan to get a custom from him. He makes custom folders fs in the filders fs

but they usually don't last long.

I can give you his email addy or phone # if you send me an email or pm. Alan is a really nice guy.

Craig.

Buy whichever knife you can touch and feel. Recommendations for others favorite $500 knives can put you $500 in the hole. A really crappy hole.

That's easier said than done, I'm afraid . . . especially when it comes to custom knives. It's always best to buy a custom knife from an established maker. That way, if you're dissatisfied with it for some reason, you can sell it with little or no loss.

^ This is my issue. I have never gotten to play with any Striders or CRKs. MTs I have handled however.

Another vote for a custom! You can get a really nice knife for that much. Check out the exchange section here

You work in an office and use a bedlam to open mail and slice bagels?
Seems to me like you need a more appropriate knife for your tasks, such as a William Henry.
I bet you get some odd looks from your coworkers using a hard use combat folder to slice a bagel.
