I have had a lot of "Hinderer-Designed" knives (Cryos, Thermites, 0550, 0562, 0561) and I've always really enjoyed them but I've never made the jump to a full on Hinderer. I liked my "almosts" enough that I didn't see the need. Recently, I got a ZT 0392 which is as close to an Eklipse as one can get without the actual Hinderer brand on it, and I absolutely fell in love. One thing led to another and I now have a XM-18 3.5" Skinner on the way. I'm pretty excited!

I'll get pictures when it comes!

I've got a 3.5 Skinner inbound too. Hopefully it lands in my hands Tuesday. I've never seen one in person so I'm pretty excited to try it out.

Originally, I swore I'd never lay out that kind of cash but the excellent ZT 0561 and 0550 reeled me in. The 0550 is a very good knife but 0561 is simply superb.

I'll update with my initial thoughts once I get it in hand.

Congratulations! You are about to see what all the passion is about when you handle that Hinderer. I was in the same situation not long ago. When you get it, you will start thinking of how you want it pimped. Then, you'll begin to narrow the field on which one to get next. I was told that's how it worked and didn't believe it. Like I said, not too long ago…it worked just as I was told. Over and over again.
Have fun with it man!

Well, got today. At first, to be honest I wasn't dazzled with it right out of the box. After spending a few minutes with it though I really started to appreciate it.

The good...

Aesthetically it is well done and the attention to detail is awesome but you guys know all this.

Mine is a Skinner and I am super impressed with the thickness of the blade stock. I am also amazed that it flips open so smooth. I would never have guessed it opens better than my ZT0561 and that has KVT ball bearings. Simply amazing.

Ergos are great and love the finger choil. To me, this knife has the refined attention to detail of a CRK knife combined with the over built quality of a Strider. I get the hype now.

The bad...

Right out of the box the blade was off center and actually slightly touches the G10 side.

The blade also has a lot of side to side movement when locked. I hope this can be fixed with a quick main pivot tightening.

I'll update once I give it a little attention.

Okay.... 2nd update. A quick date with the screw driver fixed the blade issues but I do have a quick question. Any tricks to keep the pivot screw in the sweet spot? This pivot seems to have three positions; too tight to open, just right and so loose you can tighten the pivot with your thumbnail. It works itself to the too loose position pretty quick.

I'd rather not lock tite it but I will if I must.

I did loctite the pivot and this knife is simply awesome. This thing has earned its stellar reputation.

So I just got mine and I'm immediately in love. It doesn't quite flip like I was expecting, but I've been spoiled by strong detent ball bearing flippers for so long, it just takes a little getting used to, and I'm sure it will break in a little as well.

Love the skinner blade shape, it's great. I already have a load of hardware and scales on the way :D

Just a tip if you use loctite, less is more. I have made the mistake of using too much and it sucks. Literally just a little dots worth on the screw threads (I mean literally a dot) is all you need. And do not use the Red one, its way too strong for this light of a task, stick with blue or even purple. Just a heads up from someone who's been there, loctite is pretty damn strong! :)

Edit: well I should work on my reading comprehension since you already did it, my fault. Anyways glad it worked for you :)

As promised, pictures or it didn't happen!

Congrads, excellent knife. What is the draw to the skinner grind? Does it have a certain purpose?

Flat grind with more of a belly than the other grinds. That and I'm a sucker for the "harpoon"-ish swedge.

Mine was really stiff when I first got it, but after working on breaking it in and playing with the pivot, I think I found the sweet spot. Smooth as glass now and flips like a politician, incredible. I have Bronze Ti hardware, "dark green" and Ghost Jade scales and copper standoffs on the way, should be here tomorrow!

Please post a picture with your new hardware. Look forward to seeing it.
