Well after months of neglect and abuse I finally disassembled my xm-24. I've taken apart many different types of knives before but I got to admit taking down this one made me a bit nervous due to the high craftsmanship and not having a armorers tool (yeah I know I should get one) :) I noticed there was a tiny bit of spotting near the pivot on the blade so I carefully disassembled her and sprayed her down with a light coating of WD-40 and that worked perfectly.
I plan to order some purple loctite and some nano oil for long term use to make her happy. For now I must admit I've been going the cheap route until I graduate from BLET this December (I'm transferring from my detention officer job). I would like to take a moment to thank Rob for allowing me to purchase her, she is a beauty.

I avoid WD except for light cleaning of some parts/pieces. Quality lubricants are the way.

Glad you decided to get to know your gear. It's very important. This is my....there are ...like it, but this one is mine.....

Learn it, be confident in it and it's maintenance and it will take care of you...this is true with many things.

Thanks N2K, I remember reading that somewhere but you are right, I was thinking of only using it as a short term problem When using WD. I should just keep it as a redneck cologne :D

I got a 24 the other day that was literally dripping wd-40
it was filthy dirty with lint sand grit black goo
I guess the previous owner thought a bath in wd would clean it? idk
disassembled it, bathed it in alcohol, took the hairdryer to it and frog lubed it up!
now she's silky smooth and fires hard
real nice detent on this one
*thwack*
ready for action!

I just got my first one the other day and am going to be taking it apart this weekend (Hinderer tool coming in the mail today). What lube you guys recommend? I've been meaning to order some. I have a tuf cloth that I wipe my knives off with before putting them in the safe, but don't feel like that's enough.

Someone needs to tell Hinderer Knives to stop using WD-40...

:)

I keep it away from my anodized pieces...just because. So, that keeps it far from some of my knives. During the manufactering process, I'd have WD-40 on hand...cannot think of any shop without the stuff.

Slip2000 is amazing stuff, I use their EWL and EWG (grease) on my firearms and their EWL 30 weight on my Dillon. They make knife lube, I've tried it on my Lionsteel but I couldn't tell if it worked or not, then again the LS isn't as smooth as a Hinderer. I've been tempted to dab a couple drops in my XM18 to see what it'll do but it seems to be breaking in nicely all on its own.

Yeah, I have an anodized XM-18 I just got at blade. Smoothest knife I have ever seen. Got another coming in today and just want to make sure I take good care of them. :D

Any High Quality, light viscosity (5-10w) machine oil works well.
As I have mentioned in other threads, Good oil in a great applicator is a nice thing to have.
The oil I use is suitable for knives, guns, fishing reels, sewing machines etc.
Good lubricating characteristics (Slick doesn't gum up, stays put) resistant to moisture.
Pic :)

Strider recommends using WD-40 to clean their knives. Just hose it down and wipe off all the excess with a rag and q-tips. But that's cleaning, not lubing...

Daiwa Reel oil has been working wonderfully for me as a pivot lube in all of my knives....

For anyone desirous of watching a video that specifically details the takedown of the XM I would direct them to a video done by Rico801
Do not bother adjusting your volume (thankfully) it is a very well done video sans commentary.
