Today our mail carrier brought the familiar and beloved triangular box. Only this one was much shorter. The JKM is bigger than I expected. A quick pull of the tape measure showed it to be almost 8" from tip to buttcap with almost four of that being sharp edge. The horn is long enough for three fingers but there's and unground section of the blade that lets me get my whole hand on the knife. Feels good in the hand. Very stout but it looks wide enough to be a good cutter. There a couple of minor flat spots on the horn and where they meet the tang isn't seemless but it think it'll be fun to file and sand it to perfection. The fit of the buttcap to the horn is outstanding. I knew I would be pleased. Shanker made my 12" siru and it's nearly as nice as either of my Sher's or my Kumar. In fact, the Mrs. said last night that if she was going to carry one it would be the 12" siru. The kid does good work. The "dangler sheath" I have mixed feelings on. The "sheath" part is good. It's the "dangler" part I'm not so sure about. When I get around to making a new sheath and cutting some stuff I'll write up a field report. Anyone else get their you-name-it-deal blades yet?

Just unwrapped my 2 Kumar Kardas, ordered on Monday. (They ARE fast, aren't they?). One is plain horn, the other carved. Both made by R.R. Very fine work. About 5 3/4 inches of blade, handles fit nicely in my hand (which is large), especially if I choke up on the bolster.

Might even tell my wife about (one of) these.

They arrived in a RECTANGULAR box. Wierd.

I received a JKM-1 a little while ago, and was very pleased with the way it felt. Very solid.

Glad you like your new friend.

My JKM-1 arrived today too. Very well executed by Kumar, great sheath also. It's 8-1/2" OAL - MUCH bigger than I thought it would be - and will replace the Bilton as my boot knife, where it fits very comfortably.

Now who can tell me the proper way to wear a dangler scabbard when it's not inside the boot?

I just received my JKM-1 half an hour ago also. I like it. I like it a lot. I actually put off ordering one of these because I thought that it would be too small. I have to say that I'm pleasantly surprised that I was wrong. This is one hell of a knife, even if it is kinda shrimpy compared to other HI products.

I'm really stoked about this one, too. Here's a pic of it along with a well-used bilton and karda.

SFK,

It's not to difficult to file a choil in that unground part of the blade, or round off the edges a bit more if you like. I did that to a JKM-1 and knocked a off bit of the upper point on the pommel and it got real comfy.

The dangler can be worn like any other sheath, on the weak side. The idea is that it can move out the way when you sit down or what not, and won't poke you. The only issue is they seem to be a little loose, the Scandinavian version they are modeled from generally have a tight molded fit on the handle to prevent loss, so one hand often has to hold the sheat when drawing. And the strength of the thong, the Scandinavian versions have rawhide thongs.

A puukko was sent to Nepal and the JKM-1 is the result. Cute, ain't they?

I gots me one of thems. :) A handy little knife I must say. There's one in my desk at work for opening boxes, slicing cardboard ect. Works really well for such things. Even has a convex-like edge on it.

One of my co-workers picked it up and told me it wasn't very sharp. :( I hung my head in shame.

I made a fine cardboard and duct tape sheath for it though. Not as fancy as the one Sarge made but it works.

Aardvark, I love my Kumar Karda in the kitchen. So be fore warned if you tell your wife. She may keep it. :D
Bruise, that was more than one sentence.:D Be careful, you never know what might happen now.

HMMM, could anyone post some specs on the blade thickness, hardness, tempering, overall weight? Thanks.

it's a hair over 3/16" but less than 1/4" thick, an inch from edge to spine, 3 & 3/4" edge, 1" unground steel, the horn is 2 & 3/4" long and about 2 & 3/4" around, the buttcap adds another 1/4". It's not as hard as my WWII but feels like a tough little blade none-the-less. It's maybe a shade lighter than my Buck 110, also a hair lighter than two 2-blade trappers. What's that make it, 6oz? Cool little knife. Can't wait to round up some leather and get to work on a sheath.

Chitlangi today. What a beauty, best balance of any khuk I own. the big buttcap assembly balances it wonderfully. I forgot what a spiffy job he does, clean work. nice blade inlays and steel carving. Scabbards' a bit toght, but I'm working it in slowly.

Also got 8 HI Seaxes sittin on the kitchen table. Pix to come.

BOx review: I also had a RECTANGULAR box, about 6x8x48 inches, in which al this stuff cam to my place. the chit was in the standard triangular box inside the other box. Losta newspaper. Seaxes wrapped individually.

JKM-1s are sweet little knives, I've got one by Sanu, and one by Shanker, and love 'em both. A JKM-1 makes a great companion knife to any khukuri, especially if you carry a larger khukuri strapped to a backpack and want a small but sturdy knife to keep handy on your belt. Hardly notice you've got it on until you need to cut something, then you'll find it more than up to the task.
