by Ron Balicki and Dr. Steve Gold. Nope not a review, I'm about done doing those. 192 pgs and B&W photos and the latest JKD book to hit the market.
Honestly, I don't like a lot of JKD books and only recently with B. Richardson's book do you see some weaponry. Anyhow, this book was pretty interesting as it showed some of the various arts and drills that influenced JKD.
What caught my eye were the drills and the series of set ups and counters. The FMA knife vs hand section was really a variation of Balicki's Defensive Edge tape series but still worth seeing. Lynn Thompson and F. Valenica lend a hand too, Thompson uses an attack/entry that some folks will either love or hate. Diana L. Inosanto lends a hand in the Silat section, which was real similar to Errol Depe's material.
Wing Chun folks should look at the Muay Thai knee defense section. Balicki shows the improper way to defend against a knee strike up close and the proper way. Interestingly, the "wrong way" is one defense some teachers show.
Training for the disabled is actually an essay by a wheelchair bound student of Balicki. No actual techniques but more of a training insight. The Legal section was for folks not tuned in to their local laws or the 'Net IMO. Each time I see Balicki's material it strikes me how he shows a middle ground approach to training. The sequences he shows aren't always easy but not overly complicated.

As always, books and/or videos are not a substitute for actual hands on instruction by a certified instructor.
The author is in no way associated with Mr. Balicki and feels that Mr. Balicki should definitely not have a mustache.
