first impressions of Buck Mayo 172

My initial order of 20 Buck Mayos just arrived and I had promised to give a report on my initial impressions. In a word, this is a great knife. I have picked two of them at random out of the box. Both are hair-popping, shaving sharp. The frame lock seems very sturdy and the workmanship is outstanding. One of them seems to open a little slicker and smoother than the other but the one which is a tad less smooth is certainly exceptable to me. I really like the way the knife rides when clipped in my front pocket. It is light but I can feel it there, just to my liking. Even though the handle is titanium and very light, the knife does not have a "blade heavy" feel at all. In fact, I think it is perfectly balanced. The frame lock is very easy to disengage although it is not quite so simple if one is wearing heavy gloves. My heavy winter gloves made it a bit more difficult when I tested them out. I think I prefer the oval hole in the blade to assist one-handed opening over a thumb stud. Of course, I am used to a hole as my (almost) everyday carry Odyssey also features the hole. As a first impression negative, my only dislike is that the M logo over BUCK is electro-etched rather than stamped on the blade. Likewise, the Bos logo, S30V and U.S.A. are also etched on the other side of the blade. Obviously, this is a nit-picky complaint.
In conclusion, I think the Buck Mayo collaboration is a winner. Yes, it is on the expensive side, but when you consider the materials, the workmanship and the execution, it does not seem over-priced. I am anxious to hear from others as they receive their 172 models.

As soon as you get those 20 in the mail to your customers, I'm sure we will all give some more feedback....
ALL 20 of those are for customers, aren't they???? Or did you actually plan on keeping one for yourself???

:D ;) :p

Dan,
I like the knife so much, I decided to keep mine for my collection and to keep your 172 as my daily carry. You are now at the bottom of my list!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

:D I like that bottom of the list move!!

BTW, I can see you are from Peru and so I understand your difficulty with a second language, but its acceptable, not exceptable! :p

And I am certainly happy to hear the folks at BUCK are paying attention to the details! Thanks.
My favorite quote is from Michaelangelo: "The details are not the most important thing, they are the only thing!"

If Dan is at the bottom of the list then does that mean the rest of us move up one? :D

I've been waiting for the 'right' S30V folder to come along. Sebenza and SnG are out of my price range, and I was looking forward to the updated Spydies. I've got an Atwood Prybaby Mini to handle the tough stuff, and my 172 will make the perfect EDC partner.

BTW I like your quote Larry. Jim Elliot?

Tom,
Now that I flunked a junior high grammar test, will you still respect my review?!! I guess my haste led to waste!

SteelDriver,
Yes, the quote is from Jim Elliot whose shoes I would be unfit to tie.
Is not God's grace a tremendous gift to those whom he has chosen? No one has moved up on the list because I have decided to allocate the newly available 172 for my everyday carry!!

Dan,
I do not see anyone named Dan on my list.

Regards to all and Dan, you can calm down. I am just jesting you, my friend!!

If my name is not on your list of knives "to" ship, does that mean it was ALREADY shipped.... Should I be checking the mail box ??? Ya know, I'm pretty sure I DID sign the check BEFORE I mailed it!

Gee thanks "DAD" !!!!! :p :D

Received the Buck 172. The knife is great. Love the action. Just one question. Is the clip titanium? Just wondering, Thanks, Rob

What do you two think of the lock up?? frame lock?? fit and finish?? smoothness?? Thanks

Lock up is perfect. Fit and finish are also exceptional. Opens up very nicely.

Hey, guys! I am new in the forum. I want to carry mine tip up. I only bought knives with tip up carry until now. Best knife I have yet to own!!Got some modification in mind for the front part, too wide unlike Mayo's original.:(

Sorry dude. No tip up for you. Tom doesn't make them that way and I can't say that I blame him. Those blades are sharp! If you want tip up you'll have to go with the Sebenza.:D  ;) :p

Well, the way the blade snaps in tight I doubt it ever opening in my pocket.Never had a sebbie open by itself either and theya re just as sharp. Know anybody that can move the clip?Nice spot right where the sebbie has theirs!:Danny

dannyv: I also prefer tip up carry, but probably will not alter this knife. So, I will put this knife in my utility folder group. Also, I cannot open it inertially. It's smooth, like a Sebby ( of course it will be compared to a Sebenza by many knife people ), but not the fastest for me to open. I like the way this knife feels in my hand, though. It also has a tight, unobtrusive TITANIUM clip! It seems that reaching back for the opening hole to the degree required on this piece, lends itself to opening speed in that there is a lot of potential energy built up by that time. At least, it seems I have to move my thumb farther back to access the opening hole ( oval ). By leaving your thumb in contact with the blade, as opposed to "flickin' it with your wrist, the knife opens very smoothly. I guess what I am trying to say is that I have decided to just open the knife the traditional way that most knife manuals tell you to.. Thanks again to Buck, Tom Mayo, Paul Bos, and Larry Oden. Stay safe, Rob

Am i the only one thats happy with Tip Down?? Sorry to say it, but my Sebbie opened in my pocket before. Tip down is the only way to go:)

TheBadGuy: No, I am happy with the knife. The three friends I showed it to loved it, also. Many of my favorite knives are tip down. I was merely stating that it is faster for me to open one with a tip up configuration. I really like the 172 and would buy it again, tomorrow, if I lost this one, tonight. After all, it's a BUCK! ( That's what I say when I hand it to someone. );)

Hey, don't get me wrong ! I already ordered another from Larry. By the way, thanks again Larry. I am dead set on a tip up carry. Like you said ,smooth as the knife is , I gave to put my thumb way back at the end of the oval to open and the handle is really thin giving my last three fingers hardly anything to grip against. I moved the clip and tied it temporarily in atip up carry and it worked well giving me pleanty of leverage to thumb push the blade. Try it !The second knife will remain as is though.
