My initial order of 20 Buck Mayos just arrived and I had promised to give a report on my initial impressions. In a word, this is a great knife. I have picked two of them at random out of the box. Both are hair-popping, shaving sharp. The frame lock seems very sturdy and the workmanship is outstanding. One of them seems to open a little slicker and smoother than the other but the one which is a tad less smooth is certainly exceptable to me. I really like the way the knife rides when clipped in my front pocket. It is light but I can feel it there, just to my liking. Even though the handle is titanium and very light, the knife does not have a "blade heavy" feel at all. In fact, I think it is perfectly balanced. The frame lock is very easy to disengage although it is not quite so simple if one is wearing heavy gloves. My heavy winter gloves made it a bit more difficult when I tested them out. I think I prefer the oval hole in the blade to assist one-handed opening over a thumb stud. Of course, I am used to a hole as my (almost) everyday carry Odyssey also features the hole. As a first impression negative, my only dislike is that the M logo over BUCK is electro-etched rather than stamped on the blade. Likewise, the Bos logo, S30V and U.S.A. are also etched on the other side of the blade. Obviously, this is a nit-picky complaint.
In conclusion, I think the Buck Mayo collaboration is a winner. Yes, it is on the expensive side, but when you consider the materials, the workmanship and the execution, it does not seem over-priced. I am anxious to hear from others as they receive their 172 models.
