First impressions of my ESEE 6

Well I finally got around to getting one of these ESEE knives. Got an E-6 for Christmas. A couple months ago I went to SMKW, held them all, and decided this model would suit my particular needs. I intend to use this knife mainly to process wood when backpacking/camping during the colder months, but wanted it to be a good all arounder aswell. OK, so some initial thoughts now that I have it in hand for more than a minute......First off, the fit and finish is excellent. No complaints there. The blade was pretty sharp outta the box and edge geometry is good. The knife is light for it's size and the balance is right on the first finger where it should be. Sheath retention is excellent and I'm diggin the OD. I wish though, that there was some method for belt attachment other than spending half the cost of the knife for the molle back. I'll figure something out and I've seen some good solutions here and there in this forum that others have done. I need the pommel to ride at least level or lower with my belt line. I really, really wish the knife did not have the choil. In the hammer hold, the handle design is so good that I think the knife could do without it. I'm too use to my F1 where there is very little gap from the finger guard to the beginning of the blade's edge. I knew this going in and obviously it wasn't a deal breaker for this particular knife. I doubt though, I'll be purchasing any of the smaller blades due to this factor alone. Well....possibly an Izula ll. Overall, I'm pleased so far with my decision to purchase this knife, but I need to do some field work with it before my confidence is 100%. I plan to do some extensive testing soon and will post up a full review then.

Love my 6, you won't be disappointed... Have you seen the belt clip for the 5 and 6?

Yes. I've seen the belt clip Pea-Ta. The knife will ride to high for my liking with that option. Here are some pics I saved to reference as I knew this would be an issue for me. One was pretty recent from Dannyboyleather I think. Can't remember who the other two were posted by. Anyway, these are what I was thinking. I'll just have to figure out how to implement something similar for mine.

the 6 is next on my list...and every post like this pushes me that much closer to diving after it!

Can't wait to hear your excitement after you get some use out of it!! Congrats!

I'm leaning towards picking up a 6 in the near future as well. Please do keep us posted as you work through a solution.

When I attached my Molle back for the 4 onto my 6 with parachord it was pretty similar to the settups you have pictured... I'll post some pics when I get home. I love the Molle backs but I'm not a fan... Don't even know how that works hahah

You will likely grow into the knife. I know I didn't really like the 6 at first, but it grew on me a bit. Although it still isn't a knife I use very much, due to preferring other blades.

Here is a pic

You could also sew something together like in the pics you posted...

I do like the knife. Believe me, I wouldn't have purchased it if I didn't. Even my F1 took a couple of outings before it had my full trust. You can't learn the pros and cons of a particular knife until you really get out and use it. Other than the choil, which I don't think is necessary, I have no complaints about the E-6. Thing is, in my experience, that part of the blade closest to the fingerguard/end of the scales and the belly are the two most useful areas of a knife. When carving feathersticks and such, the closer the edge to the fingerguard the easier it is to utilize leverage and maintain control over the task. And of course the belly for slicing/dressing game or fish. My belt attachment issue is just a minor one. I'm a high value kinda guy. I'm sure the molle back is nice, but it's too pricey for what it is imo. I like the solutions from the pics I posted (especially the simplicity of them) and they shouldn't be too costly. Thanks to everyone for the replies. I will post a pic when I get the sheath taken care of.

*Edit* Pea-Ta.....could you post a pic of the other side so I can get an idea of what you've done there. Looks like you've used the molle locks aswell.

The 4 Molle back is just a hair too narrow (3-4 mm) so the screws don't work... I took off the clips and parachorded the MB to show you how it would work and look. Just another option for ya.

Thanks for the pics Pea-Ta. Interesting. I already have a 2" leather and 2" nylon webbing belt that I can sacrifice for material, so I'll probably go with something like I posted above. All I need is a couple of additional rivets or chicago screws, a small piece of kydex or leather to attach to the sheath, and I'm set. Total cost of less than $10. Again, I really appreciate everyone for the replies and input.

Yup yup, I always use what's lying around and try to mod stuff to better fit my taste or make stuff work. Be sure to post what you come up with!!!

Dropping the factory sheath body down below belt level is really an EASY fix with a bit of leather. I took just a very short time to whip this leather loop out and it seems to do the job well enough. I used heavy 12 oz. veg-tanned and was careful to wet-mold it around the sheath throat and around the belt I would wear it with. Once the loop was dyed and waterproofed, it is almost as rigid as the plastic itself. Chicago screws and rubber washers (keeps things tight and silent) completed the little project. When I get the time, I have a couple more fast and simple ideas with the factory sheath (cross draw). I did try using kydex for the loop, but I like the leather much better.

Dannyboy......I was hoping you would see my thread and the pic of yours that I posted. Your solution is actually the one I like best. Classic simplicity at its best. Thank you for posting the pic showing the reverse side. I assumed yours was one piece of leather but I wasn't sure. I will have to pick up a piece as the one I have isn't wide enough to attach to the sheath itself. Already have the 4 chicago screws that came with the knife. Never worked with leather, but it doesn't look too difficult. Again thanks for the pic and the how-to.

so...basically, you can sacrifice a cheap "tactical" sheath or a leather sheath and screw it to the kydex...sounds like a weekend plan for me
