ok, so i figured i haven't really started any new threads in while so it might be good to give something back to the community. anyways, i picked this one up at ems the other day. it was a tough choice between that and the infinity ultra as the ultra comes with a clip and lanyard whereas the sonic just comes with a little keyring connector thing like what comes with the M*glite solitaire. almost exactly the same actually.
so i ended up going with the because it was $5 cheaper ($20 vs. $25), and because it was smaller to fit in the 5th pocket of my jeans easier, especially because i already have other stuff in that pocket (chapstick, small pen, tiny lighter). I was able to choose between black or red and i decided to go with red figuring it would be easier to find if i were to drop it in the dark. ideally though it could be painted with glow paint or have a traser glowring attached. aaa battery was included.
anyways, i got it out of the horribly annoying blister packaging and was impressed with the nice feel it had and not terribly sharp knurling (2 bands one about a third of the way down from the light emitting end and another on the lanyard end, which you twist to turn it on.) anyways, i opened it up, dropped in the battery (button first i believe) screwed the end back on and when i tightened the end all the way down it lit up. pretty nice beam, seemed pretty bright compared to a photon or similar, but with a kind of annoying blue hotspot. not as blue as a blue innova microlight for example, but a fairly strong blue twinge to the beam. i wouldn't see it interfering in use but i imagine it's not nearly as white a beam compared to the arc-aaa premium or perhaps even the standard model.
I do feel kind a guilty buying this as opposed to an arc because i know arc products are really great and Peter Gransee seems like a really high class guy who really cares about his customers and listens to them. and i also would love to give them money to help in their (i assume still ongoing) lawsuit with M*g (don't get me started
:barf:
) However, the cmg was on the shelf and when you need a new toy.... well you know how it is.
anyways, seems like a pretty quality product, mine currently has a lanyard on it taken from a solar powered light (can't remember the name right now) and it works well with jeans if the loop is wrapped around a belt loop with the light passed through the loop. i like this method because it keeps me from losing it and from it flopping around but it's still easily accessible and i can using it without even removing it from the beltloop. (works well for carrying a small set of keys in your 5th pocket too.)
anyways, overall seems like a pretty nice product, i like the color and the lack of knurling all over. also the review wouldn't be complete without mentioning that the light turns on from rotating hte back as opposed from the arc where you rotate the head, i'm not sure what this means in use because i actually don't have an arc-aaa yet (i know, and i think of myself as somewhat of a flashaholic as well as a knifeknut), but it's pretty easy to turn on with one hand. i hope this review was useful to someone.
Oh and here's a picture courtesy of glowbug.com (hope they don't mind):
