First katana build

Hi guys. I’m attempting my first katana out of W-2 tool steel. I’ve used W-2 before but only on smaller projects, when normalizing my steel wasn’t really an issue. But now with such a big project I definitely want to. But can’t find much on it in dummy terms(me being the dummy). Do you just have to get it up to its annealed State and then let it cool, repeat before heat treat. Thanks for any info

I suggest posting this in shop talk.
There is lots of discussion about HT.
Are you trying for a hamon?

I only do stock removal myself and send it out for HT. There are plenty of experts discussing HT in the shop talk makers sub forum. I think you'll get a good answer quickly.

w2 is a bad idea for a sword imho, the carbon variance is just too high for a sword; from down to 0.85% up to 1.5%, you're gonna have toughness issues if it's at the top end

you'd be much better off going 80crv2 or something more dialed in, even 1075 : ) but keep us updated on the work in any case
katana builds are always fun

depending on your w2 supplier, it might not be so bad, njsb has 'aldo' w2 which is supposed to be locked in at 0.916% carbon, which would be a much better option than plain w2
