Okay, I saw Slade's photo's of the Frankenleeks, and fell for the 1660TSW. I just got it in the mail yesterday, and I like it overall. However, the three screws on the top have come loose after a few flips. I tightened them down, put it in my pocket, used it a bit and about an hour later, they were loose again. Gave it a little more this time, the flipper wouldn't flip, backed them up a tad, flipper flips. I think its good, then an hour later, everything is wobbly again.

My other EDC's are Benchmade (14210 and a Grip). I've never dealt with this before. I thought about locktite, but not so sure I want to go there as I was thinking of swapping a G10 handle onto this knife for my perfect edc. What's going on? I now carry a small hex in my bag and my wife laughs at me for it.

get a torx t6 and t8 (for the screws and the pivot respectively). i always take apart new knives fully and clean and polish the pivots and put militec-1 grease inside the torsion chamber and all around the pivots. as a result i usually fully tighten the scale screws and then adjust the pivot to the point of no bladeplay and then use blue loctite on it. even if you loctite its easy to break the seal as long as you have the proper driver.

hope this helps and congrats on the purchase, i noticed 4 days after EDCing both frankenleeks that each became wobbily and i had to make adjustments. just part of the fun for me :)

3 screws? Are you talking about the handle screws that are along the spine of the handle? A very small dab of blue loctite applied to the threads will hold them in place.

Here's some helpful info on how to properly set the pivot screw:

As mentioned, get some blue loctite. Use only a very small amount, like a toothpick's tip. Put the locktite on the pivot screw threads and tighten it down. The blade shouldn't engage the speedsafe if you tighten it enough. With the knife set like this, push the flipper as far as you can until the blade partially opens. It should stop there. Now back off the pivot screw until the torsion bar takes over and pushes the blade open the rest of the way. Back the pivot screw off another eighth of a turn, and let it sit open overnight. This will give the loctite time to set up. The next day, it should be good to go.

Experiment with the tightening procedure a few times prior to applying the loctite. You'll get the feeling for the proper set for the pivot screw. Its really not hard to do. And remember 2 things: a very little loctite goes a long way, and if you decide to take the knife apart, make sure the blade is open first!

And I was corrected tonight. The pivot is a #10 torx...appearantly I've mixed up my bits, and stuck the #10 in the #8 slot!

If you run into any problems, give us a shout. We'll walk you thru it!

I carry a Random with a G10 front scale. Make sure you request some Shallot handle screws from warranty before you start your franken project. It is likely that your random blade won't lock up right on the full G10 handle. You will need to keep the framelock and install the G10 front scale. When you do this the G10 handle screws are too long, the steel handle screws are too short....Shallot screws....just right :D

And now for some pics....

I have found in this configuration loctite may not be necessary... I don't use any.

That looks a lot like my "ultimate" frankenleek, but it had a normal S30V blade instead of the reverse tanto, and it had a titanium lock slab. I miss it a lot. :(

Wow, thanks for the help everyone. I'm messing around with it already. I was under the impression that locktite was a more permanent solution.

Thanks for the heads up about the Shallot screws. I'll remember that for the project. What does Kershaw charge for the screws?

(For what its worth, had the torx, called it a hex, right tool wrong name).

Kershaw makes their screws in-house. They're free. Just drop them an email and ask for some!

And the entire ZT line uses 3/8ths hex nuts for the pivot.

I was about to say... that would be the perfect EDC Leek. G10 front, framelock back, S30V blade.

DV, the #10 torx was in the Skyline thread. The leek uses the #8 at the
pivot. Amazing what old age and jars of alcohol will do to an old man. :p ;)

What! Who's tomfoolery was this anyways? I'll bet CRAIG GREEN had his hand in this somewhere...

Oh great...here I am on this newfangled interwebz thingy, and I've got kids on my lawn! Excuse me whilst I go yell and shake my fist at them.

:D

I know Tommie designed the Skyline, but I'll bet at the last second, CRAIG GREEN switched the pivot size screw just to mess with him. :D

Anyone that can do Mr. Roboto as well as CRAIG GREEN can, could pull this prank off without anyone noticing!

CRAIG GREEN!
