First Khukuri. Which One Should I Buy?

It depends on some factors. What is your build, weight, height, and fitness wise? What do you plan on chopping with your khukuri(s)? The BAS is good for lighter chopping and slicing chores. It'll help you decide on what you'll want in you next khuk (believe me, there will be a next khuk, and another one, and another one...;)

Welcome to the Cantina, BTW.

Depends on what your going to use it for, your height, hand size, just look around and see what you like from HI. Your first won't be your last, also watch the forum for Deals of the Day usually posted once a day , you can get very good buys. Welcome to the Psycho ward/Cantina.

Welcom home wayward wanderer. If you search around here you will find many threads on the same question. All the answers are similar. It doesn't matter. You need a couple Khuks for your truck. You need a couple in your shop. You wanna couple large ones to show off in your living room. They make great gifts. And the daily specials are so exciting that you'll be waiting at your computer at work from 1:00 est to 4:00 est every day with baited breath. And everry day when they arrive you'll be itching to send the mail even thoughj you scored one yesterday!

Good luck with the wife. Lots of threads on how to deal with that too!

Andy

Edited: Oh and if you want to start with a small knife I think some of the Sgt Khadka's are still available a few threads down.

Those, I hear, are the cream of the crop of small khuks! And cheap too!!!!

Pick a size and go from there...

Scot, LMRRAO!!!! :D  But so very apt!;)

bfieldburt Welcome to the Cantina/Psycho Ward!!!! :D

What the guys have told you is spot on. An all around khukuri that fits you does depend on what you're gonna do with it.
HI has such a varied line that there is a khukuri for every task imaginable.
Many of them will do for an all around khukuri but on the other hand many of them are pretty much only good for a couple of tasks to perform really well.
My favorites are the 17" Foxy Folly, the 17"-18" BGRS, Baby Ganga Ram Special, and the 17" - 18" BirGhorka Villagers.
They range in weight from 24 to 31 ounces.
The khukuris that run from 26 to 30 ounces make for the best all around choppers IMO.

If I were you, I wouldn't get one. You won't like them.

Read the safety thread.

OK, My opinion is the 15 AK, villager if possible, is best first choice.

Tarwar will do most everything you need a knife to do.

Cut down trees, clear paths, prop up your lean-to, slice veggies, make kindling, whittle.

Best of all, it's not one of those second hand 'bent' knives you see around here all the time...

Welcome.

My first khuk was a wood handled 16.5" chiruwa AK. About 2-3 hours later I bought a horn handled BAS. Since then I accumulated many more and found out that the chiruwa handle is not for me. My two most commonly carried khuks are the BAS and a 15" AK. They are big enough for some serious work but small enough for comfortable carry. IMHO these are perfect hiking khuks. I am also big fan of my villager 17" Baby Ganga Ram Special.

please send all unloved or unwanted HI kukhri's and 'bent' rejects to kronckew, address on request. they will be adopted and given a permanent retirement home in the consulate's home for retired sharp pointy things. we endevour to keep them oiled and fed with ballistol, take them for walks, and let them lead the fulfilled and rich lives so long denied to them.

note: we also take in tulwars, kopis, falcatas, klewangs, dhas, saifs, shamshirs, shashkas, yataghans and any other poor sharp pointy thing breeds.

and remember, a knife is for life, not just for christmas!

p.s. - kismet and bamboo, of course, obviously will now no longer participate in the daily DOD feeding frenzy, leaving more of yangdu's babies available for adoption by the rest of us.

kronckew, you silver tongued devil you.;) :D ;)

What Kismet said. First of all, every one I've ordered arrived bent down. Why they can't make these knives straight is beyond me. But then, a lot of things are beyond me.
But if you must, please don't overlook my favorite khukris - the 12" and 15" sirupatis. Around here they're referred to "little khukris." In any sane cantina they'd be called "...honkin' big ass bent knives." What these folks call a "full size knife" - other, saner, more civilized people would call swords.

bfieldBurt;

First khuk I got was a BAS. I'd have it still if another didn't need it more.

For me, it was beautiful and useful, but immediately proved I needed a longer, heavier khuk.

Welcome, Burt.

I just received what looks to be a very nice BAS... I'll post pictures in a bit...

I love my big WWII (18.5"/ 28oz) but it's a dedicated chopper. And boy does it chop! The 15" AK is all around handier. The WWII is for trees/logs. The AK is for chopping things that wouldn't otherwise call for an axe or a chainsaw. Oh, and welcome.
