I own a CS Ghurka Kukri. It's nice to look at, but I would like to have a nice knife that's also a great tool for cutting and chopping out in the woods. This need struck home when I recently looked at a outdoor survival book written by a guy who was a Brit combat survival instructor. The book photos with the man's knife showed it wasn't just for looks, but a practical, useful tool. - - My question is, if you were starting out and had never owned a HI khukuri, what would be your suggestions for the new user and collector for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd models to get? Why? - Thanks, - PointShoot

My first choice would be one of the village models that crops up on occasion. These are made by local village kamis rather than employees of HI, but they carry the same warranty and the blades are tough as nails. Downside is the rough finish, so you have to take more care of it to prevent rust and they are just plain ugly from a looks-alone perspective. Most of the village models tend to be 15" OAL utility pieces or Sirupatis, but I've seen them all as village models, so if you wait long enough you'll find the perfect one for you. Email Bill about what he has...
The village models are super-tough and you won't mind abusing them at all. PLus most range from $60-$85 or so, so they are very affordable. SEcond choice would be to try and get a blem model. These are the regular Shop 1 and 2 khukuris that have a blemish, usually a handle crack. BFC members are having excellent success patching these cracks with epoxy, and these models have the great Shop finish at a fraction of the cost )most are $85-$125 depending on the model). Finally, aim for the regular Shop khukuris and by this time you'll be hooked!

I was stupid and onf the three khukuris I have theay all have horn handles, and 15-16 inch length. I should have aimed for a Sirupati and diversified my little collection a bit.

Following Uncle Bill's suggestion my first was an 18"WWII from shop 1. It is the best humper, chopper, "emergency tool" that I own
incl the CSGK and others. One forumite stated that it handles like a conductor's baton and that about sums it up. You won't regret any model you decide on. Uncle Bill and HI have an intensely loyal following that is totally justified.

Namaste!
