First KMG Work by Our Newbie Mike Maupin

I wanted to put in a coupla of comments here, first I want to thank Roger for posting these pics for me and I am wide open for comments good or bad. I know I am light years behind you fellows but I learned a few things from this last week of grinding.
The top knife #1 is from an old Simmons file I had in the shop, matter of fact it was the only piece of steel I had that could be used for a knife. I wanted to try the KMG so bad I just picked it up and started grinding, didnt aneal it or draw any outlines or anything. I was just going to practice and one thing led to another. The pic dont show it but I left the file teeth on the blade behind the plunge line, and the handle is a whitetail antler. The bottom knife #4 is 01 steel that I got from Koval a coupla days later and the handle is ivory micarta, I did draw an outline on this one and profiled it before I started grinding. I dont want to talk about knives #2 & #3 they were a tragedy :( #2 I lost from a major screw up while grinding and #3 was lost in the heat treat, I learned that you dont quench in oil thats 30F:rolleyes: Thanks to every one for the help, only down side to the KMG is that it is a GREAT machine and I dont have any excuses that I can blame on the equipment:( Mike

Very good, Mike! Wish I could'a done anywhere near that good by my 10th piece, let alone 1st! Your background in other things metalworking has given you a great start to those who've never touched steel much before!

Sorry about not calling you back. I lost your phone number. Then things got hectic. Now I'm apologizing. :)

Good start to hopefully a long string of knives. You've made a heckuva first effort. Only one thing I'd suggest... don't "count" the tragedies...those are just "experiments". :)

Take care, and have a great Christmas!
