After a year long wait I have finally returned to knifemaking. I now have a nice shop setup with a decent assortment of knifemaking tools.(Shop pics coming soon!) My good friend and fellow maker Chris Crawford and I decided to see if we could make a small fixed-blade knife in one night's work. So, with a LOT of help from Chris here's the result:

smallknife1.jpg

OAL: 5-1/4'' Blade Length: 2-3/4'' Flat ground blade is O1, nickel-silver bolsters, black linen micarta scales with bronze pins. It's a small knife but it fits nicely in the hand and the bolsters add just enough weight to make it feel "right" in the hand. We started about 6pm and with an hour or so break for some din-din we finished putting the hand rubbed finish on the blade around 1am. :)

By the way, you can see more of Chris' work at http://www.chriscrawford.com/knives

Nice looking knife! I've been working on a miniature damascus hunter. Its been a good distraction. Thanks for the picture.

i really like that style of knife. it appeals to me for some reason.

BTW-i used to live in tupelo, and will be moving to memphis this summer,i would love to meet you and chris. im working on getting all the tools i need for a shop right now.

Nice - looks useful

After only a couple of weeks from my shop it takes me a day to find the light switch.

Glad to see that you are getting back into the knives...
This is a sweet looking little knife.
Great job.How did you guys do the heat treat on this?
Bruce

Man that's sweet! Nice finish, and just the right size for my urban world. Looking forward to seeing more. How thick is your stock?

Dave

The heat treat was done by heating the knife to non magnetic in my little micro-forge and then doing a semi-edge quench in some veggie oil. Then we tempered it by running the spine of the blade along a orange-yellow hot rail-spike until the straw color popped out where we wanted it to. The stock is 1/8th inch 01. We really had a good time making this little knife and it inspired me to do more of them in different patterns.
Thanks for all the comments!!!
Derek

The stock was actually 3/32". Derek did a great job, and it's a beautiful little knife. It would make a great neck knife or something with a pocket clip. I believe I'll make me one this weekend. :)

Woops! I thought we had used the 1/8th. Next one I do will be 1/8 I think. Give me more room to make grinding mistakes. =)

Thats cool.I was wondering how you got it done so fast if you had done a oven temper.I used to draw the backs like that and the steel worked great for me.I guess I just got lazy and started using the oven.
Again Cool Knife.
