Hey everyone, I just bought my first "real" knife. Although it's still cheap I was wondering a few things. Can flicking a folder open do any serious damage to the knife, and are their any parts that should be lubed with any type of oil to keep the action smooth? I searched this stuff but well I got about 40 results and none of the titles sticking out to me. By the way it's a Gerber AR BBS (yes I know it's a cheapo to alot of you)

Welcome to Bladeforums!

Flicking is relative -- how hard are you talking about? Any action slamming metal against metal can have a negative impact ( :) ) Once you get used to working the knife, you will learn to "flick" it just hard enough for it to lock open. That won't hurt it at all.

It's a good idea to lube the pivot, and depending what conditions you're using the knife under -- what you're cutting, how long until you clean it -- you could also prevent corrosion by oiling the blade.

What to use ... so many choices. You can start with food grade mineral oil, from the pharmacy. This is also good if you use the knife to cut up food, as it is non-toxic. Drip a tiny amount into the pivot area an work the blade a bit to get it in. Drip a tiny bit on a fingertip and rub it on the blade, then paper towel off the excess.

The only problem with oil is it can attract dust or lint.

i have flicked all my knives hard!!! and nothing happened. given that my knives are CRKT and benchmades but gerbers are still good quality knives. the blades on most folders just don't have enough weight to do any damage to the pivots or the stops, eventually it will show wear (shiny spots from metal to metal contact) but that's all.:)

I do not "flick" my knives unless I have a need to ... but ... I do agree that unless you are doing something unusually extreme it really should not harm the knife. I do believe, though, it can wear the "fit" on a liner lock quicker by flicking the blade hard, ... but that is just my opinion.

WOOK

I've flicked my native for good 3 years until I retired it due to bladeplay. That was due the the amts of prying I do with it, not from flicking it open which is sometimes needed if I'm wearing gloves at work.

Welcome to Bladeforums. The only knife I have a problem 'flicking' is a CRKT M16-14T, and the only problem there is that the liner lock becomes very hard to disengage when the blade it 'flicked'. I also use food grade mineral oil on my knives that come near food. For the rest I use Militec or Lucas Gun Oil, but I think the oil you use is just a matter of personal preference.

Yeah, don't worry to much, I've not had any problems flicking any of my knives, the only thing I would say is, after awhile pay close attention to the alighnment of the blade as it enters the handle, over time it could start to veer left or right and nudge up against the inside of the handle. Other wise have fun. IMO if you want a good inexpensive knife (folder) then get your self a Kershaw leek.

Best EDC pocket folder I've worked with. Not too big not too small and there are too many styles to them.

Black, rainbow, gold, stainless, serrated, sv30, zdp, and so on and son.

find one you like and their basic models can be found for about 40 bucks.

You shouldn't be disapointed.
