OK guys and gals I want to start out by thanking anyone willing to help. Now on to the point of this. I have drawn out my first design for a knife. I do have a bit of metal fabrication training (about a month geared towards aircraft repair). I know this knife is curvy but i can handle shaping metal in that way. Any critiques are welcome and encouraged. I can not wait to get into this hobby.

Welcome to the addiction. I hope you have a rich uncle. I would say start by transferring that drawing to a piece of hardboard, cardboard, plywood or plexiglass and cut it out. See how it feels/fits in your hand. My initial impressions are that the handle is a bit short. Also, the line of the bottom of the handle runs smoothly into the cutting edge. One slip and your hand will slide right into the blade, ouch. Try a version of the sketch with either a level change from the handle into the blade or with a guard. By level change I mean a difference in width between the handle and blade so the drop in the blade acts as a guard. Like this:

nice design. i'm just getting into knife making also. i love coming up with designs. i have found that i need a minimum of about 3.25 inches of usuable handle space for four finger grip. that is not total handle length, but actual grip area. a finger guard of some kind is probably a good idea, especially with a curve like that. the only other thing i notice is bevel height? how thick is your knife going to be? that might have to be adjusted if you desire certain characteristics from the knife.
also, i4marc, where did you get that graph paper?

I will be working with 1/8 inch thick 1095 from njsteelbaron at 2 " wide. I see what you mean about changing the handle so i don't slice my fingers off...yikes! Thanks guys
