I am in the process of designing my first knife using stock removal and 0-1. I have a design that I made but am not real sure how good it is. I thought about making a copy of a schrade I already have because I have used that knife on dear and found it to be a good design but it doesn't seem to hold a real good edge. I am however, unsure about making a copy of a knife being manufactured. I am not real sure how to post a picture or I would scan my pattern I designed and let you tell me what you think. Any help you guys could give me with my first knife design would be appreciated.

'nothin wrong with copying a proven design, just look at how many loveless style drop point hunters are out there with other peoples names on them.
Seriously though It's a good way to learn the basics without having to worry so much about wether it's going to work after you put all that time into it.

What I usually tell guys just starting out is to make your first knife really simple and send it out for heat treat. That way you are pretty much guaranteed to come out with a knife that will work good and keep you happy for many years.
After the first one though you should go with whatever crazy ideas you may have:). The reason I say send the first one out for heat treat is so that even if your first attempt at heat treating turns out disastrous, you'll still have that first knife to keep you motivated to try again.
Another benefit to sending the first one out is that it gives you a good idea of what your chosen steel should perform like. Just keep trying to improve your methods until your knives will outperform that first one.

Enjoy the ride:D

thanks belstain, I will keep it simple and use the design of my current knife. thanks for the help

Congrats on making your first knife! I keep saying I want to make knives, but I've yet to take the plunge. I do have a few designs. I went to a hobby shop and got some balsa wood in different thicknesses. When I think I have a design I like, I paste a 1:1 scale copy of it on balsa wood that is the same thickness as the knife and cut it out with a coping saw and dremel tool. This lets me see how it feels in the hand and allows me to fine-tune the design.
