Well there she is, my first little tanto done. The handle needs to be wrapped properly but until my ito gets here this is it. I could not be more pleased with how the Hamon turned out, you might be able to see it in the photos. There is a shadow running down the middle of the knife. Also the Hamon itself is a very crisp white line, is that rare? Usually the Hamons I see are black with a brighter blade. Even using my brother's 1080i HD camera I don't think the pictures quite do it justice-- they're nice, but it's just so pretty in person.

Big thanks to Chris Moss for all the help and instruction with this knife and helping me to become a bladesmith.

Very nice first knife!

We need all the juicy details though.

What steel did you use?
OAL
Blade/handle length
Did you do the HT yourself.
etc.

Ah, Grasshoppah, you hava listen to mastah chrisss well.
( and you are not near old enough to know what that is all about)

Nice job, Jonah.

The hamon dips a bit low toward the ha-machi, but that isn't all that much of a problem.

Are you coming up to the Harrisonburg show?

The steel was W1 I believe, supplied by the good Master Moss.
The OAL is 11 inches, handle 4 inches, blade 7 inches.
Seeing as I had never done and knew little about the HT, Chris did that. We actually did it twice, the first time was a flop of a Hamon, and the second I couldn't be happier with.

Looking at it this morning the white Hamon line turned black, depending on what light I hold it in it changes color, and it still has a shadow running down the middle of the blade. I am very please and very grateful to Chris for his help and instruction. I look forward to my next knife project whenever that takes place.

I don't know, I'd have to get more info on it before figuring out if I can go or not. The biggest problem would probably be the risk of spending all of my money on really cool knifes while I'm there. :D

I owe its beauty and complexity all to Chris, I did alot of the work on it but at Chris's instruction. And he did the heat treat. Really the credit goes to him.

Very good job bro. Keep it up and don't get sucked into the meaningless money holes most young people get sucked into. This is a craft of worth and pride. Plus, thanks for not using stupid internet speak!

Great looking knife and even more so for a first but...

Anyone has an apps that flashes or something when a thread that is more than a year and a half old is resurrected? I always find out only after reading through most of it. :(

I think it is awesome as well. I know this thread is old but I would like to know what you learned about the form and different parts of the Japanese styles. I find them pleasing to the eye and they have been around a long time. I would like to make Japanese styles one day.

Umm, guys, he made that knife almost two years ago. IIRC, he is in the Marines now.
You are a bit late to the game.

LOL me too...agreed, having a 'resurrected thread warning icon' would be nice.. :)

Even though this thread is so dang old, I'm new to the forum. I'm new to knifemaking. I can't even comprehend this as a first knife; it's astonishing.
