Hey guys,

Being a basic member-type, I can't do much searching, and it seems this thought may have already passed... But...

What event do you first connect with knives? And did it contribute to your eventual path to Knifeknuttdom?

I'm going back to seventh grade, in the Boy Scouts... buggin' Dad to take his army knife with me on a campout... A nice Camillus Pilot Survival knife issued to him in Viet Nam ( I still have it!) - I thought I'd be the envy of the bunch! And of course, once he said yes and I took it camping... yup, we had to play Mumbly Peg and try throwing... I mean, don't all little boys think GI Joes threw their knives?

Well, the blade chipped... and I know how "upset" my father would be :grumpy: ... Yeah, he reamed me a new one, asa he slowly ground out that chip on an old carborundum stone...

But, I think that whole episode got me interested in knives, and watching him lead me to a whole different appreciation than I had before... and have had ever since!

Now, if I throw one, I make sure it's a cheapo!! :D

I had a Old Timer pocketknife when I was a kid, but when I was about 12 or so, I got the Buck Special from my dad for christmas. My cousin got a Ka-Bar the same year. We ran around the whole next year with our trusty knives strapped to our waists like we were Rambo. I was hooked then, and have been buying knives since.

Won a knot tying competition in Boy Scouts when I was 11. First prize was a SAK....

My grandmother got me into knives:D . My first knife was a National geographic SAK. Then she let me play with a Buck knife. I don't know what kind it was. All I could remember was it was big:D . From that point on I had a lot of little keychain SAKs which are all gone now:rolleyes: . My next type of knife was a CCC butterfly knife. This is what got me started.

It was the Case Boy Scout "camp knife" that my Grandfather bought for me when I was 12 or 13. I cut everything from flies to trees with that knife, and always kept it sharp, oiled, and well polished. I'm also pretty sure that I used it to carve a couple girlfriends' names in a picnic table or two (and maybe even a couple school desk-tops :)).

My First knife was a Barlow, got it for my 10th birthday. Carried it for 10 years..:D

Mine would have to be when I was four years old. It was 1973 my grandmother gave me my grandfathers old cattargus serpentine, two bladed jack knife (right after his funeral). I whittled for three days until losing it, but ever since than I ve been hooked!~!!!

my wife tells me Im still looking for Grandpa's knife!!!...lol~lol...hmmmmm...maybe theres somthing to that?...lol!!!:D

I don't remember how old I was, maybe 8 or 9, but I remember going to the store to pick out my first knife with my dad. I picked a little black Buck 425A. After that it just grew. I always wanted new knives, and my wonderful grandmother was nice enough to buy some of them for me when she knew my parents wouldn't. She bought me a nice Buck fixed bladed hunting knife and a Buck 110 folder before I was 10 or so.

I still have that first knife my dad got me, it rides on my keychain everyday. And the Buck 110 is still around as well. The fixed blade on the other hand was snapped in two while I was into my knife throwing stage. It lasted a surprisingly long time being thrown against a plywood board that was nailed to my bedroom wall (that was also not nearly thick enough to protect the wall behind it......mom loved that!) Anyway, ever since I have loved knives. I remember buying Blade and Tactical knives magazines when I was about 14 or so. I just look forward to the day that I have a job that pays well enough to support my habbit. Three years and one semester of college to go!

My folks never would buy me a knife soooo... When I was 11 or 12 y/o I mowed grass and collected pop bottles and went to an auction and bought my first knife myself. It was a fixed blade with a plastic handle and a leather sheath and I was on top of the world. I slept with it and it never left my side except when I went to school. Next year I scored a Schrade 125OT at the same auction. I still have both knives. The handles are gone from the fixed and the OT is still used at times in camp. These knives hooked me for life.

Probably since I was in the 2nd or 3rd grade. I wanted a pocket knife as much as little Ralphie wanted a Red Ryder BB gun in "A Christmas Story".

Then on a fishing trip, my father gave me an el cheapo, old pen knife (half rusty) because he got tire of cutting my tangled lines.

Then he gave me a better stockman style pocket knife shortly after.

But my first good knife was in fourth or fifth grade when I got an Old Timer.

Then throughout school: Swiss Army to survival knife to bayonets, swords, etc. Not a big collection or anything. Just pieces here and there. I was 15 years old, riding on my BMX with a Toledo steel, 16 inch bayonet (which I still have). What a stupid kid I was!

Then I caught the folder bug back in 1997 with a SOG Magnadot.

I consider myself a knife nut, but not a collector since I don't have a huge collection. I'll only buy a knife if it is significantly different from what I have.

Well, this would appear to be mainly a masculine thing (lack of female experiences?) and it seems to coincide with ... *gasp*... Puberty?!?!
Hmmm.... do ya think this could be a marketing opportunity??!!? :D

Hey, there are a lot of excellent throwing knives around. On the lower end is Cold Steel TFT ($20) and on the higher end is Mueller's damascus Viper. Try them and you will be hooked to the rest of your life (like me ;)
