I finally finished up my first knife. After spending quite a bit of time reading old archived posts here on the forum, as well as reading a few books (Thanks $50 Knife Shop !), I decided I wanted to try and make a knife for myself.

The blade is 440C and the handles are Ziricote. There are lots of beginner mistakes here and there, but for the most part I'm happy with how it turned out. Once I get a sheath done it should make a nice gift for my Dad this upcoming Fathers Day.

I must say that Knifemaking is addicting ! I find myself daydreaming of belt sanders and steel most of the time now. I'm looking forward to starting work on a second knife and increasing the quality as my skill level develops.

Thanks to everyone here on the forums for help in answering my questions and for being a good source of answers. The "Search" feature was my best friend during the making of this knife.

Sorry for the crummy photos, but learning to take decent pictures will be another skill unto itself !

Very nice :) The pics look a hell of a lot better than the ones I try.
Good job ! :D

The heat treat was done by myself. Backyard style ala "$50 Knife Shop". It's not as optimal as doing it a professional HT oven, but it's all I could do for now. The knife seems to cut well and is plenty sharp.

Nice work. Where did you end up buying the steel?
J-dogg,

House of Tools in Langley. They are no longer bringing steel to the Langley store, but if you can commit to buying at least 6ft (about $60 total for 440C) they will bring in some from the Calgary store. They also, or at least use to, carry ATS-34.

What is up with all these first knives looking so good?! What ever happened to a ruff cut piece of saw blade with pallet wood handle slabs and nails for rivits?

Searously, that is a very nice knife with a lot of extra's that you don't find on a lot of first, or 100th for that matter. Good job. You'll be laying awake nights now for sure!
