After earning your whittling chip you are permitted to carry a knife to Cub Scout functions.

The question is what knife to get as my son's first?
It should be something simple and not expensive.

Here's what comes to my mind:
Opinel No 7 carbon
Case American Workman Sod Buster Junior
Kershaw Corral Creek Sheepsfoot
SAK Pocket Pal

What do you think?
Suggestions?

I think you already have a great list. Some sort of SAK is always a good first knife. If you want a small locking knife The Esee Zancudo or Rat 2 would be great. I found a Spyderco Native at a great price on the exchange here and that is my daughters first knife.

I'd get one of the Official Boyscout knives. They currently are SAKs

I'd be going for the Opinel 7 in carbon. Inexpensive, simple, needs to be looked after (because every cub or scout should respect their things) and works very very well. The other knife that ticks those boxes is the Svord Mini Peasant

2nded,

Most of the stuff I remember doing in the cub scouts the opinel would be perfect for.

Thanks for the help so far. I agree with the caring for your tools bit.
Kabar Dozier and Small Buck Vantage have also been suggested

My knee jerk reaction is Opinel.

After working with my nephews on learning knife skills (with parents permission I taught some basics, then we "whittled" some soap bars together) I think thats the best choice. My nephew is cub scout age, and he was having a hard time with the opening and closing action of the traditional I had him use (my first scout knife, a cammilus "scout" knife, and its got a decent backspring). In retrospect, the Opinel would likely be easier for him to operate, while still teaching the "right" things about knives. And importantly the lock is operated without the fingers anywhere near the blade.

Oh, good call on the svord. That would be great as well. It does rust pretty easily though, at least in comparison to my Opinel (#6 Carbon), and it also took more work to get to an acceptable level of sharpness. So that is something to think about.

Sod buster junior. More cool than a SAK (no offense, they are still great too), but not big enough to upset the less knife-friendly scout leaders/parents. I'm partial to yellow handles over red ones :)

What I consider a good starting pocketknife is a good ole Buck 110 the come pretty sharp and the are good knives that just don't break so I would get him a traditional pocketknife and work him up from there.

Thanks for the help and suggestions.
Ordered three knives and will let him choose one.
I'll be happy to use the other two.
